Speaking of visual barriers, the Milner library parkade entrances need a similar rethink/reno. The plaza behind the library is cut from the street thanks to these bunkers.

EDMONTON - Biopharmaceutical company Gilead Alberta is spending $47 million on a 45,000-sq.-ft. expansion of its research and manufacturing facility in Edmonton, and will create 80 new jobs once construction is complete.

The Edmonton facility develops and manufactures Gilead’s investigational medicines for clinical research programs in the areas of hepatitis C, HIV/AIDS and cancer treatments. It employs 250 people in research and development, drug manufacturing and quality assurance.

“This expansion represents an important opportunity to recruit highly trained clinical and technical professionals in Alberta,” said Robin Nicol, vice-president and general manager of Gilead Alberta.

I have done a fair amount of work on the other parts of thier facility. In my Gods gift to Balancing days.

Saw a new Mayfair rendering, much better squat tower... even some curtain wall. Podium is worse though, very 1997.

I should get around to posting some pics of our company's new headquarters. It's nothing special, but it is an addition to Edmonton's high-tech industry.

Historic 104th Street a Great Place

Edmonton's 104th Street Promenade has been selected as one of the 14 finalists in this year's Great Places in Canada contest.

The promenade, also known as the Warehouse District, was once the location of the city's fur industry. Now, the historic brick buildings are home to retail shops and restaurants and are the backdrop for the downtown farmers market.

Lacombe's Historic Main Street and Calgary's 10th Street/Kensington Business Revitalization Zone are also shortlisted. Winners of the contest sponsored by the Canadian Institute of Planners will be announced on World Town Planning Day, Nov. 8.

Four city supermarkets are among 23 Sobeys must sell to seal Safeway deal

Grocery retailer Sobeys has agreed to sell 23 stores in Western Canada so that its acquisition of Safeway can go ahead, the Competition Bureau announced Tuesday.

The chain must unload the stores because the federal regulator found Sobeys' proposed $5.8-billion purchase of Safeway Canada "would likely result in a substantial lessening or prevention of competition in the retail supply of a full-line of grocery products in certain areas in Western Canada," the bureau said in a release...
