In Thunder Bay's case, since we don't have fluoridation at all, the $600,000 cost was likely including the capital necessary to put a system in place.

Just before we had that debate, we rebuilt our water treatment plant for $100,000,000; fluoride didn't come up at all during that 10 year process.

I think we have a lot of architects, engineers, and other professionals that would or should know a lot about project financing and was wondering if they had suggestions.

This be true Steveo, thier are many experts on the forum who could suggest positive change I'm sure.

this comes across as bs....... if u read about it giving us shit for raising property taxs they dont take into a account we had an unsustainable tax freez and last i checked calgary has been raising its taxs to.......

Winnipeg has scored poorly in a new report on Canada’s top 100 cities in which to run a business.
The Manitoba capital ranked a lowly 64 on the Canadian Federation of Independent Business’s 2013 list of top 100 entrepreneurial cities, which was released today.

Brandon, the only other Manitoba’s city included in the Communities in Boom report, fared a little better. It was ranked 40th.
The CFIB said Greater Calgary and Saskatoon are once again the top two major Canadian cities in which to run a business, finishing first and second respectively.
"Growing communities raise property values, utilize infrastructure more effectively and provide residents with a greater range of economic and social opportunities," said Ted Mallett, the CFIB’s vice-president & chief economist. "It’s important to recognize the communities that do this well, and to point to them as an example of how others can improve."
Ben Kolisnyk, CFIB’s prairie policy analyst, said although Brandon improved one spot to 40th place in this year’s study, there is still room for improvement.

Haha... no chance they'd take that! You'd have to sweeten the pot by throwing in Investors Group Field and the new exhibit at the zoo

I wouldn't mind Calgary giving up the contract on Rollin Stanley either. He would be a nice addition to the Winnipeg roster. Perhaps as the new CAO?

Seems to me like a wake-up call. Not our place on the list, but the continual slide downwards. Face it - what new medium and large businesses have opened here lately? None. We live in a very business unfriendly environment.

Is anyone else on SSP at this time experiencing slow loading pages, choppiness, etc..? This started yesterday sometime and has continued on up untill this point. IF it's only me it's not internet wide, just SSP ,especially the Winnipeg forum. thx

I know it's another wannabe big city thing, but why doesn't Winnipeg have rotating billboards? we have the huge LED screens popping up everywhere, so why no rotating ones?

I'm pretty sure I remember see in one or two around town in the past. I would think that the elements and weather here in Winnipeg would effect the performance of the rotating mechanisms.

There were at least a couple around town... as a youngster I was quite impressed by them. The biggest and most prominent rotating billboard that I can remember was the one on top of United Army Surplus on Portage, which advertised Champs Chicken for the better part of the 1980s.

I would imagine that those signs have been rendered obsolete by LED screens which are far more practical.

Now that you guys mention it, Winnipeg used to have many more interesting billboards back in the day as compared to now. These days it's mostly just the standard smallish billboards... when I was a kid there were a lot more of the huge showstoppers on top of buildings, etc., especially in and around downtown. I don't think you're allowed to place billboards on top of buildings anymore (existing ones are grandfathered)... it was regarded as excessive visual clutter. Personally, I think they gave the city a certain character.

I spent a ton of time in Edmonton this summer and they have just as many LED signs as rotating signs.. their weather is just as extreme as Winnipeg's so I do not buy the weather excuse!

*edit* yes the stadiums have these signs, but why not the general advertising landscape?

LED signs can be changed by a central computer and present an unbroken image.

Rotating signs must be changed manually, and the image they display has vertical lines due to the gaps between rotating panels.

So which one do you think a profit-oriented business is going to put up?

The rotating signs in other cities are just left overs.

It was always interesting to see how long it would take the sign company to come out and fix the old rotating signs when they went out of sequence and had one strip from another ad in the wrong place.

Talking about the old style spectacular billboards, Boston Pizza wants to put one up on the abandoned supports on the Casa Loma building (650 Portage @ Sherbrook) but the city administration is against allowing them to go ahead and want to force the building owner to take the supports down.
