^ you probably need to consume fluoride in massive quantities to have it affect your bones. Not a concern for the general public. Especially since we have all been drinking fluoridated water for decades now.

Looks to me like dental fluorosis is not a health concern, but an aesthetic one. I had never heard of it before, but wikipedia taught me.

a poster takes the time and effort and has the kahunas to list 20+ things he'd try to do to improve Winnipeg if he was Mayor and you rag him for speaking his mind on 1 point???...(+ I learned about fluoride use, cool )

List the things that Sam has done your not happy with?

If mayor I propose "Smoke a Fatty Fridays", for all Civic employees.
It would save the city countless $$$ That could then be spent on infrastructure and have civic employees much more relaxed and able to do thier jobs on Monday? win/win

That's my platform, It's working (in a way for Trudeau), federally?
Ok..Rag on Me, I only listed my 1 point.

what types of science do some of you believe? you harp on 1ajs about fluoride but I've seen many of the same people blatantly deny climate science. in regards to fluoride, it shouldn't be added to the water, people can and should be able to make their own decisions about what they're ingesting. if it's in the interest of public health, something like a sugar tax (where the user pays not everyone in the system) would be more appropriate, but again, not necessary.

Many cannot afford dental visits, this is an effective (and from what I understand a very cheap) way to help those (and anyone else who drinks tap water) prevent/reduce tooth decay.

^ it's politics. The real issues don't matter.

In the states, it's abortion that gets all the voters stirred up.

In Winnipeg, apparently its fluoride.

But in all seriousness, things that can make or break a politician are their views on random topics. Especially hardline views. Out of all those things that 1ajs listed, honestly it was the fluoride one that stood out to me. For better or worse.

I think the thing that 1ajs remarked on that caught me off guard was that his ANT is a dentist.

That's why I mentioned "Smoke a Fatty Fridays", for all Civic employees.
Note: I had a federal job for 4 years, provincial for 3 years. I realized this pledge would hit a large demographic of Winnipeg voters.

Of course not publically but when it came time to vote.

...........I understand what your saying I was the 1st to chime in after the fluoride posts.

Just to touch on this a bit -- people here seem a bit in the know about project financing and politics, and everyone here seems to want more; more lanes, more interchanges, more bus rapid transit, more everything. So, if you had to prioritize things, what would take the axe?

How would you prevent the City from actually getting to 8 billion in infrastructure deficit in the next 7 years?

Thunder Bay voted against using fluoride because it cost $600,000 a year to implement and only 2% of the fluoride that paid for actually made it to the people it was intended for. Almost all of the municipal water was used for things other than consuming. You don't need fluoride to wash your car, you don't fluoride to wash your dishes, you don't need it to shower, or do laundry, or put out a forest fire. It is removed through the water treatment process at bottling plants, and for almost all food using water, most of the water is discarded before consuming the meal. And what are kids drinking all the time these days? Not tap water. Without an initiative to get kids to actually drink tap water, what good it putting medicine intended for them into it? Might as well be adding it to Brussels sprouts, kids are just as likely to eat that!

If a year's supply of kid's toothpaste and toothbrushes cost $16, we could supply every kid in the city with 6 years worth of dental hygiene for the same price of one year of water fluoridation.

Like Riverman, our city council totally disregarded any argument that fluoride was bad for health, and went straight to the financial argument. That $600,000 could also be used to provide actual dental care to those kids (which Ontario, at the time, was not providing.) We do provide fluoride tablets to people for free if they request them.

Interesting. Winnipeg's fluoridation program cost approximately $250,000 last year, or 35 cents per resident (http://winnipeg.ca/waterandwaste/water/fluorideFAQ.stm).

How exactly did you connect my quote, below, to me having a solution for preventing Winnipeg from a potential 8 billion $$ infrastructure deficit in the next 7 years????

If I had a Masters Degree in Economics or Finance maybe I would have had the solution for you or actually be sitting on City Council or even on Broadway? I'm not a politician or care to throw my hat in the ring either.. The poster had concerns over fluoride use?..and no one posted anything other than thier take on fluoride and ragged on him

What's your solutions and platform? I don't have one??

get a paint recyling program going. use the latex paint as aditive to make the concreat more flexable thats one thing i would be implmenting...

again sittimg down with departmwnt hwad discusing these issues and then i would look at the options we have. the city has income of w 200 million if we come up with a proper plan i would imagin if we talked to the feds we could negiate funds to pay for part of the debt payments over that period of time making it easyer to pay for it all.... again have to sit down and talk who knows what will happen untillvu talk to the buricrats and polititions
