Since this isn't the Biennale thread... I really wish Onni's Central had a little more design to it... looks really top heavy. But I do appreciate it not looking like just another Concord tower.

This OMA building from Singapore, dubbed The Interlace is a nice stacked design:
Granted it's a much larger site though. Pics from OMA.

If not for the existing and older towers in the background, this would have been a mediocre shot, and not so eye-catching.

Craft Beer Market will finally open its doors on November 7th. The place looks pretty cool inside, I just hope they can deliver a better food menu than Tap & Barrel.

I second this, food is average at best at Tap and Barrel and the prices are a-typical for a vancouver waterfront restaurant (aka grossly overpriced for fare that is marginally better and in some cases worse than fast food) hopefully craft's further distance from the water will result in better quality food and drinks

That thread should've been closed ages ago and has nothing to do with this thread anyways.

Just home from this open house. They seemed to be getting lots of praise from the attendees. Sure to get approved in something close to this form.

I'm disappointed that it is not more urban. One of the Concert reps agreed with me that these are basically garden apartments for people who don't want to feel like they live in the city. Any hopes I had that the city grid of the Olympic Village could be extended to Quebec were quashed by a COV planner. This will be a quiet pocket of nice condos and a big lawn for passive uses.

ya i dont think the smaller streets are supposed to extend that far. the streets in ov was planned to be in 3 tiers, with 1st being the main one that connects everything. the smaller streets are supposed to be low traffic and for local use.

More urban being what exactly? More pavement?

There are plenty of condos to go around in the downtown core, I think Concert is building what the market is demanding.

Quebec is curved, the only "grid continuation" would be extending Walter Hardwick and/or Athlete's Way, but that would just cut up the complex they are building even more. As a resident I'd want people to just use the roads to drive in and out of the area, not cut through on their way elsewhere.

I think it's nice, at least visually, to see the slice of green space in there.

Why would people want to live downtown or close to it if they want quiet homes with gardens? Olympic Village is right at the urban core. It seems that nimbyism exists even before the potential nimbys move in. Hmmmmm.

Seriously, where else can we develop into something highly urban and new in Vancouver? OV is like the perfect location for that, but it looks like that will not happen.

Then there'd be no need for Stanley Park either I suppose; a balance of green space (call it whatever you like) and urban density is real necessity. If I live in an urban jungle I also need some respite. This area is already set to be highly urban with more than reasonable connectivity, it can't be completely continuous as such.

Green space within the City is good for the soul, people would go crazy without it. Any condo with a terrace is and always will be worth more.

If you look at a bird's eye view of Vancouver, there is enough 4 level or less buildings that can easily be up-zoned into a couple of million condos over a period of time. ... nothing but land.

Understand that green space is needed; I myself love parks and gardens. However, there is more than enough fields in that neighbourhood, including the huge one west of OV which I never see anyone on it, the grass mound north of Science World and more future huge park and field at the northeast corner of False Creek.

For the Concert development, I would love to see at least a continuity of retail space to link Main and Quebec to the OV retail centre at the plaza. The field should be scaled back to become a park like Emery Barnes at Davie and Seymour.

I do agree about zoning-up low density areas in other parts, but it would never be large scale such as OV. I hope a new City Council in the future would be able to do something great and exciting on the east side land of OV, but I find it highly unlikely.
