Sometimes I think land lying vacant for years and years is preferable to bad development though. But while interesting to hypothesize on, this topic of conversation when it comes to urban development is often just that -- hypothetical.

If they build a hotel and then add some decent-sized apartment or mixed-use buildings in the lots around the T station and the West End bridge, then I will probably be able to live with the resulting complex. It won't be my idea of great urban design, but it could still represent a reasonably intense use of that land and transportation infrastructure.

I agree with Aaron on the industrial sites along the mon river in the southside or visible from the south shore. I think the Almano plan sounds appealing with what they designed but just thinking out loud here...Why dont they move all of the industrial uses to the almano site and create a state of the art port of Pittsburgh with ample space for loading, parking / access for tractor tailors, and some mixed use space that would include some manufacturing, office and retail that would make sense for the number of employees, users etc.

This way the sites closer to the city center and high rent districts like south side and Oakland can be redeveloped into something more vibrant that ties in with other riverfront life projects and amenities. Almano seems so far off the beaten track for what they are planning and Hazelwood isn't exactly the type of market that is going to complement what is planned. It may be better suited for industrial / manufacturing.

I know its probably logistically / politically impossible but I for one would like to see some comprehensive planning around our river fronts that really evaluates this sort of thing and not just "ok here is another site lets build a (spin the wheel) (tick, tick, tick, tick) a retail development with apartments!" "Lets hire a consultant to design it now"

Toby Keith and his frat douche ilk of flag waving morons may make one vomit in their own mouth but I think the bar and grille thing he's planning will bring attention to the north shore to show the yinzer white trash of this city that the north shore is no longer a worn out ghetto but a desirable place to live and visit.

People going to the Toby Keith bar won't be more enlightened on the North Side, they will go to games and or the bar and that's it. They will park there and that's it.

I don't mind the casino in theory, but have always disliked the lazy design and monster garage that was also done in lazy way. And that is a also a problem with cities and one off casinos... there no reason for the owner to give a 🞵🞵🞵🞵 and while the city should, they don't either. Both view it as a cash cow, period. Cities have leverage to hold casino owners to standards, but don't.

Apartment complex planned for the Strip District

"The idea is that this is going to be an iconic building and that it will be easily recognizable. The hope is that the architecture, the location and the quality of the building will lease it very quickly," said Art Lubetz, principal for Front Studio Architects, which is designing the complex.

Excellent news, doo dah! The more residents living Downtown and the Strip District, the better!

Some renderings of this project were posted a few months ago. More info from the Planning Commission.

That would be so cool to someday see larwencville all the way to downtown transform into an incredibly dense vibrant urban neighborhood. With all these lots getting developed that's happening quickly.

Found some pictures, let's see if this works:

Did we already see this a while ago? Now that I look at it, it looks familiar.

It's pretty plain and boring but whatever, it's progress.

I can't say that I love the design but I don't hate it. Since it's pretty old school modernist without much ornamentation, it's hard to tell how good it will look without being able to see the quality and textures of the surfaces up close and in person. It's at least more interesting than Lot 24.

I like the atypical-for-Pittsburgh colors. Otherwise it seems pretty conventional, but nonetheless a nice addition in terms of needed rental units.

I've honestly never seen "Braddock" and "chic" used in the same sentence so if anyone can provide some pictures of this new development in the near future, that would be much appreciated.

Speaking of Braddock...is whatever was planned on the former site of the UPMC hospital (urgent care?) finished being built or is that still just in the discussion phase?

They are very similar to the new construction going on in the Hill.
