Although new skysrapers would be nice, I don't ever want to see the current COB go. It's totally dated, but it's been a big part of the skyline for so long that I can't imagine it not being there. I've come to love it. If the church decided to put new buildings over the wing span, how would they find a good mix of 60's architecture with modern architecture?

I'd rather see a new office on 200 W. Medals Plaza would work as well. But I'd want to see highrises in those spots, which I don't think the church would do.

Since we are on the topic of the COB, how many of you would like to see the tower refaced? Quartzite columns kept, just over-lapped. Maybe with aluminum to make it even more like the former WTC?

That could work well...I could also see them demolishing the current Family History Library and the Museum and rebuilding them elsewhere in a different configuration. They grew out of the Family History Library a long time ago; they use overflow space in the Joseph Smith Memorial Building, but they could use upgraded space. The museum is fine, but again, out of date/could use an upgraded design. If they bought the Plaza Hotel (don't they already own it?) they could include that space in the proposal and use that entire parcel along West Temple.

I really don't want want to see the COB demolished *or* refaced. It's far from my favorite building in the city, but I think we're doing a disservice to history and (dated) architecture by just destroying or resurfacing buildings we don't like. That's what covered up all of the great stonework in the mid-20th Century (or worse, destroyed it) -- I don't think we should reclad the COB just because it looks dated.

Years ago I used to think I would like to see the COB resurfaced, but I've since changed my mind. I've actually grown to like it's elegant simplicity. I would only make a slight modification, and that is to reconfigure the north facing stairwell openings at the center. If they were more in line with the design of the south facing facade, I think it would make for a much cleaner look. Other than that, I say leave it and as you guy suggested, an additional tower to the west would be excellent.

One thing I've noticed, the COB is much more attractive than the many towers of that same era and facade design here in L.A. Salt Lake really only has one major tower of that same 70's designed facade. I think it's important to keep it, from an historical and aesthetic standpoint. A forumer once pointed out and I totally agree, as the skyline grows the COB will become a much more comfortable fit.

After reading the many related posts to this editorial a week or two back, it was good to see this editorial this morning. Hopefully this time there will be a long term follow through.

In our opinion: Pioneer Park plan makes sense

Deseret News editorial - Published: Monday, Oct. 7 2013

http://www.deseretnews.com/article/765639377/Pioneer-Park-plan-makes-sense.html

An effort to get tough on drug dealers in Salt Lake City's Rio Grande district, coupled with greater outreach to the area's homeless population, is exactly the right prescription for a problem that city leaders are now wisely approaching as a top priority, and one that might be mitigated with the right amount of focus and tenacity.

A crime surge in and around Pioneer Park has posed a thorny problem for municipal leaders, given the district's resurgence as an appealing new business, residential and entertainment center. The mayor and police chief announced a "rebooting" of efforts to cleanse the area of drug activity and related crime...

There has been discussion in the past about a residential development going in on the corner of 400 S and 800 E, this is the corner that the Pizza Hut is currently at. I have a freind who has worked at that Pizza Hut for years so I asked him if he had heard any rumors. What he has been told is that the property owners current plan is to build multi-family residential on the corner and stretching north, demolishing the Pizza Hut building and a few of the houses. Pizza Hut would then move into the ground floor of the new building. I don't know if there would be other ground floor retail or not but the fact that they are talking about some is good news to me. Pizza Hut is now trying to decide if they will find a new location on a short term lease or just deliver to the area from their North Temple and 2100 S stores while construction takes place.

You know, now that I've taken a closer look at the new rendering of 111, it does appear to have lost the undulation. Sorry to be so hasty and rebut anyone's claims to that regard before. I certainly hope it hasn't lost the undulation, but the new rendering does certainly show more of a very straightforward curtain wall.

I briefly took a look at the plans for the new multi-family residential building proposed on 500 West. It is a pretty big project, it is proposed along 500 West for the entire block length from 100 South to 200 South. There is a mid-block walkway proposed on the west side of the building from 100 South to 200 South but no such walkway proposed between 500 and 600 West. The owner of the property owns at least 75% of the entire block and this project is considered phase 1.

With regard to a project adjacent to Pizza Hut on 400 South, there is an application submitted to alter the zoning on 800 East to allow for higher density further north to 300 South. It has been extremely controversial with the residents in that neighborhood and may end up being scaled back.

Yeah, that makes me sad. I really liked the accordioning and the undulating and the waviness and the vertigo-inducing ribbed for my pleasure wall.

Too far.

Wouldn't want the inner city to get too dense, right?

UT Planner, please tell me they are not planning on demolishing the historic warehouse that fronts 200 South for this project. I think that is a beautiful building, and could be re-purposed into something great. https://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&ll=40...Is1UfbeaP6QlnJTgg&cbp=12,22.96,,0,-17.83

I second that. I would also hate for them to demolish the Redman Building at the middle of the block between 1st and 2nd south. There is a bunch of empty land that definitely should be developed, but it shouldn't come at the cost of those 2 historic buildings.

I was involved in the early planning stages of the block west of the gateway. At the time the Central warehouse was to remain, and be reused as office or lofts if I recall correctly.

The new development will develop around it.

If you do some searching you can probably find the info... But. The building will eventually have to undergo a reclad.. The material used witch was only used on one building deteriorates and becomes unstable after some time. It already happened on the other building.. eventually when it starts falling apart it's going to have to be addressed.

It seems like I was reading that the church is aware of the fact that it would actually be cheaper to rip the building down and build a new one but have opted to spend more on a total strip down of the current structure... When the time comes... Not sure where I read that I'll see if I can find it :/

Nicely said! : )

The latest rendering is very much vintage Skidmore Owen from the 70's and 80's.

Any idea what is planned for the rest of the block?

@BenWinslow: NEW: SL Co. buys land behind Matheson Courthouse to build offices fro SL District Attorney. @fox13now #utpol #Utah http://t.co/kkjPXHVpfB

...no further information than this, but it looks like it may replace the surface lot directly behind the Matheson Courthouse? It'll be on Main Street, if this is the case. Which I like. I wonder if they'll be going with that twisted, asymmetrical design that's on page one of this thread?

Update--Mayor's Office says that is NOT the design, new designs to be considered. :/
