And on that fantasy note, why wouldn't it be SLC's new tallest? I think a perfect space for it would be directly south of of the current COB, in between the Beehive/Lion House. 40 Stories? 50? Or better yet, why not follow one of the Quorum's names...70 stories.
Anyone in the know know of anyone talking about such a possibility?

According to KSL.com Church membership as of two weeks ago hit the 15 million milestone.

"Church membership has tripled since 1982 when there were 5 million members"
So your guess of it being around 4 million around 1971 ( when the COB opened ) is close.
It does raise the question though just how much can that building as well as a few other smaller buildings can handle? What are the long term plans for their office spaces? 3-4 million to now 15 million during the life of the church office building so far is a BIG jump, and I'm sure at some point they ( the church ) would want or need one bigger building vs just having several smaller buildings all over the valley. Looking at it all long term it would make far more sense to have a second church office tower downtown next to or near their main office tower.
I still stand by what I said awhile back that it would be smart to first tear up the East wing, build a tower ( 30-40 stories ), move everybody out of the old COB, tear that tower down as well as the West wing, then build a 2nd tower 30-40 story tower where the west wing is now and having a plaza between the two future towers where the COB stands today. They might have to dig a much deeper hole to add more underground levels for their parking, but they could do this while building their first tower and finish with their 2nd tower. (If that makes any sense.) Therefor turning 28 floors of office space into 60-80 floors without taking up anymore land.
I always thought that now much space those wings take up while placing a tower in the middle was kind of a waste of space and that they could of had twin towers on that same piece of land.
Just a thought.
