I wouldn't worry about it quite yet. It seems to me that they are willing change the hight limits where they can (ie Riverlanding was approved for example).

I have not heard about this, but I would be interested in it, so if you have any more info, or come across some more please share! Thanks.

They would be referring to Runway 15-33 with regards to building height.

95 metres would indeed correlate to a 34 storey building. (Providing that 34 floors is for a hotel or a condo tower.) On the other hand, office buildings require a lower "pitch" of their floors. A 95 metre office tower would normally possess around 24-25 storeys.

Is there a height limit for the areas of downtown north of 25th street?

There certainly would be --- especially with regards to the departure end of Runway 1-5/approach to Runway 3-3.

I have very detailed/descriptive reasons as to why that would be described on page 398 on the Regina Construction thread. (Similar rationale as to why things are what they are with regards to approaching/departing air traffic.)

So at some point in the future when buildings are constantly coming up against the height limit, is repositioning (rotating) the runway an option? (seems to be lots of land out there for now) or can runway 13 33 not deviate from its current orientation because of prevailing winds or some other factor?

I was wondering about this too. Obviously it would be very expensive to rebuilt an entire runway but it does look like there is room. Even 10-15 degrees more to the south would probably keep the flight patch far enough from downtown.

There is no reason for the city to limit building heights to 90 or 95 metres other than that is the limit set in the bylaws. The airport/ runways do not directly interfere with the down town core.

The height limit literally boils down to that is what the bylaws states so that is the limit. I'm sure if someone came along asking for 100+ metre height the city wouldn't automatically say no...

But then this is Saskatoon so no guarantees....

To reorient Rwy 1-5/3-3 will never happen - there's too much involved. Besides that, the cost to achieve that would be closer to a billion dollars. (For reasons which are endless.)

Well, taller structures do interfere with regards to non-precision IFR approaches towards runways.

There are descriptions as to why that is so on Page 398 on the Regina Construction thread.

Yes and if you go through all the bylaws for the city of Saskatoon, there are no restrictions due to the runways over a large part of the downtown.

The high restriction is an artificial limit from the city with respect to Transport Canada guidelines...

Do you mind posting the number to some of the bylaws so those of us who are curious may have a look?

Building Permits up in Saskatoon

Written by Gord Wiebe, Saskatoonhomepage.ca
Monday, 07 October 2013

Saskatoon is a shining star when it comes to the value of building permits for census metropolitan areas. Statistics Canada says that, in August, Saskatoon registered a total value of building permits of 141.2 million dollars. That was a 14.2 per cent hike from the month before and a 26 per cent hike from the year before. This at a time when the total for CMA's across the country saw a decline of nearly 23 per cent month-to-month and nearly 15 per cent year-to-year.

I would bet that the northeastern section of the downtown (closer to College Dr.) would be more flexible for building height.

Thing is, they barely use that runway. Every time I've flown out of or into Saskatoon they use the east-west runway. I live in Lawson Heights and it's pretty much non stop planes flying over my apartment. I never see them coming in from the other direction nor do I recall being downtown and seeing a plane flying overhead. Plus how high would a building have to be to interfere with a plane? 1000m? We're not New York. It's a silly law and it hampers Saskatoon's growth.

I cannot stand this holier-than-thou attitude when it comes to stripping in Saskatoon. I thought we've sort of grown out of this kind of thinking as we've become a more worldly city but apparently not. It's not even full frontal stripping and they're acting like we want to open a brothel next to a daycare centre. If you don't like stripping, don't go! Why do you feel the need to push your agenda and morals on everyone else? I don't think there's even a single bar in the industrial area...ridiculous. The same area where there is no late night bus service, no sidewalks, dodgy atmosphere and way out of the way from anywhere so you can't walk there and waiting for a taxi will take forever. The people coming out of a — are no different than people coming out of any other place that serves alcohol. What do they think is going to happen to us if we see a woman wearing — tassels? Also Pat Lorje is the worst and shame on anyone who voted for that fossil last election (I'm looking at you people from Montgomery) Nothing constructive ever comes out of her mouth.

At least they decided to allow existing places to have exotic dancing a couple times a month.

Sorry just needed to rant a bit...

I was at city council last night.

Lorje certainly has an iron-grip on the council. While other members asked questions and tried to seek clarification, she stood there condemning everyone.

Having strippers in industrial areas is a poor idea. Is no one concerned of the safety of these women? Why don't we go downtown, like every other city in the world.

In a crazy example they could change the approach vectors to a Kai Takish approach which would bring planes essentially west of Idylwyld and then take a sharper left hand turn whilst landing and intercepting the runway centreline and glideslope.

Here is the Kai Tak example (a now closed airport)

However this is unlikely to be needed anytime soon. This limitation on height really only applies to approach and landing as planes need around a 3% angle of attack for a comfortable safe landing. Whereas during take-off the angle of attack can be steeper reducing the need for a large height restriction.

Unfortunately the only other options were Owen Fortosky and some other random guy who never actually stated his platform. She was the least evil of the choices. I agree, she is a dinosaur and needs to go.

Also, in response to your comment on the flight paths, I am near south downtown and have planes fly overhead regularly. I also wonder how high a building would need to be in order to interfere, because they fly substantially higher than our tallest building.
