Surprises in Saskatoon? You betcha!

Visit Saskatoon in the winter, and taxi drivers tell you stories about people freezing to death in the northern Canadian prairie. Possibly apocryphal, the tales always end identically: The farmhouse seemed closer than it really was. Come summer and early fall, though, this city ranks among the great unexpected places for long weekends. The weather is temperate; locals exude small-city politeness and say “you betcha” with such gusto that you actually flash positively on Sarah Palin.

Saskatoon’s food scene has begun to pop, and the city-bisecting South Saskatchewan River serves as a focal point for seasonal activities — such as canoeing, which is a must-do and can be arranged through an operation called Canoeski (yes, it puts together ski trips in the winter, canoeski.com). Located 785 miles north of Minneapolis, Saskatoon is as surprising as it is charming.

Going directly to the New York Post website is probably easiest.

The Prosperity Saskatchewan website/blog is worth going to if your into reading about the different sectors of Saskatchewan's economy. There are often articles posted about oil and gas, mining, manufacturing, construction sectors Stats Canada reports and much more.

Enjoy!

I e-mailed North Prairie Developments last weekend to find out about when they might release some renderings of City Centre and they responded "I suspect renderings will be at least a few weeks. I will keep you advised when they are ready for release."

Only time will tell...

Wow....quite the week for Saskatoon...National Geographic top 11 urban centres in Canada and now NY Post story! The NY Post had a few minor hiccups in accuracy but still a very glowing review of our little 'paris on the prairies'. Always interesting to read an 'outsiders' take on our city and its eclectic neighborhoods, eateries and pubs!

Have you explored Caswell Hill, Montgomery, Riversdale, Mayfair, Nutana, Exhibition (and not just their 'main streets')....there is a vibe to each of these neighborhoods that is unique on to themselves and yes, I think eclectic with their mix of little shops, architecture, restaurants and services....no?? Certainly just my opinion....

There's a construction webcam for the Gordon Oakes-Red Bear Student Centre available here: http://webcam.usask.ca/fmdeagle.html

And an earlier pic of site excavation:

If anyone's been out to check out the new residences at College Quarter, you may have noticed that some public art pieces have been installed on the grounds:

Kind of interesting to hear Atch say on the Tuesday Gormley show that the highest you can build in the downtown is 34 floors, what that means in meters don't know, or if it applies to offices or condo's.

Stumbled upon this and thought it was a pretty cool bridge that this group might like.

Does the height limit for downtown Saskatoon encompass the entire downtown or just a part of it?

My opinion of the Saskatoon/Regina "debate"? While I live in Saskatoon and love living here, whenever I visit Regina it feels like home too. To me, that's a sign of a good city with good vibes. I don't get that feeling when I go to Calgary, Edmonton, Winnipeg, or anywhere else in Canada.

I like both cities, and saying so isn't a crime.

Affinity Credit Union

Drove by the new addition on 7th Ave yesterday for the first time. Great job on blending into the area. The Wilson School sign on the front makes it look like it is still the school. There didn't seem to be any on street parking problems at the time. Great job.

I like it, I think it is a good example of the kind of opportunity for creativity we could have had at 3rd/Victoria Ave crossing. Except the people we elected already spoke, they want to rebuild the old design and have cars go over it to fuel the future traffic congestion of south downtown.

A really interesting looking place that has built many pedestrian bridges and a great trail system is Des Moines, the "Iowa Women of Achievement Bridge" on the Principal Riverwalk is the most prominent of the bunch (it is hard to find the actual cost of the bridge alone, but this construction journal had it budgeted at $9.4M USD, but then the bridge only spans about 400ft I believe):

Some excellent examples of the opportunity that presents itself to saskatoon....but will NEVER happen here.

Hate to be negative about this, but when the Mayor comes out and says there will definitely NOT be a ped bridge, within a day of a pedestrian bridge rally, speaks volumes to me about how 'open' this council is to taking a second look at the traffic bridge 3 years after its decommission!!

It is interesting how the electorate inside Circle Drive Voted Tom Wolf, and outside was Atch. Seems like Atch is treating Saskatoon as a doughnut. Humm, makes you think doesn't it.

Strictly speaking about the need for Outside Circle Drive residents to rely more on cars. Then walking / transit.

The Queen Elizabeth Power Plant Expansion and the North Prairie Developments tower is exciting news for the construction industry!

Anybody hear about a Seniors Complex in Riverside district? Offering multiple levels of care up to palliative?

I was under the impression that it was more the south downtown which was in line with the NW-SE runway approach but it sounds more like it blankets everything between the Sid Buckwold bridge and the University bridge

That can't be a good thing, I think. In the event there is demand for an office tower taller than 100m, such a height limit would definitely limit how tall future office buildings can go. For an up-and-coming city like Saskatoon, that's a little unfortunate!
