Brithgob, you should really grow up. There is no need to make that comment. He's contributing to the forum by posting links that are postive and are a direct result of the great economic boom Regina is experiencing. Any way, does anybody have any idea or even heard of any rumors of what's going on in the ground floor of the gardens on rose and centre square place? Whatever goes there will add a lot to the street life in those areas. Also I will post update pics of the towers at the university. That project is progressing nicely.

This is totally not off content , as it has to do with the accomplishments he has done for the construction of all these amazing projects he has brought to the city , and it all comes down to construction and the Regina boom

Yes!!!! I've been wanting this for quite some time but figured they'd never spend the money. But when I saw that construction fencing go up at the corner I was crossing my fingers they were putting up a new sign/gateway.

Agreed! Contrary to the beliefs of some who would criticize any expenditure of money, IT IS OK to spend some money to replace decades-old signage that identifies a university that everyone in Regina should be proud of. Linking this to the 'scandal of the day' is just plain rediculous, and I think the decision to improve this gateway to our university is an overdue project, and well worth the expense.

I agree with you guys. Landscaping is typically and after thought in this province and with developers, it is nice to see something high quality and attractive be put in place. It seems to be a natural reaction of Saskatchewanians, that if we don't absolutely need it we shouldn't spend money on it. My only beef is they have cut down three large poplar trees, which pisses me off. But To put things in perspective, you should see what other universities spend on signage and landscaping. For example here's one of UBC's signs

The signage and lettering on the UBC project only cost $35K

I'm sure that the computer controlled fountain and the lighting must have cost tens or hundreds of thousands, and the landscaping is quite minimal in that plaza. So I don't see this example as being one where the university should pay out the yinyang for a few nice shrubs and shiny letters.

(btw, I totally agree that something high quality and attractive should be put in place... what is currently existing is quite obolete looking and doesn't add any value to the campus)

of course then I find this article that suggests UBC spent $250M on 12 beautification projects. So I guess my above comment about paying out the yinyang excludes executive salaries.

Not sure if you've been on the UBC campus, but the amount of work they have done to landscape, install fountains, waterfalls, plaza's, walkways etc is incredible. And as you have posted above it was not cheap at all and has been a multi year initiative. Comparing U of R to UBC is a bit unfair, but it does go to show it is not uncommon and $1 million is really not that much when you look at what other universities have done..

Don't forget that Safeway is now owned by Sobeys so there will be no new stores, at least not near a Sobeys. There will definitely be a grocery store out there.

The Rochdale West are is designated in the OCP as an "Urban Centre" meaning that it should have very significant retail, multifamily, transit, etc. It will be competing with the Dewdney West Urban Centre, however.

No not yet. They are still doing utility work in that area at the moment.

Good news. Regina continues to build homes at an amazing pace. The CMA had 330 housing starts in September, most as multi-family. This year the city has had 2383 starts which is even ahead of last year!

I am not opposed to spending money on improvements at all, and yes UBC and other universities have done a lot. A million dollars isn't much in the grand scheme, however just looking at this one small aspect (signage, sidewalk and landscaping) on a street corner, a million dollars seems to be far too costly for what they are getting. But then I'm not a student there and it's not my tuition money being spent so I guess I have little say other than on a construction forum
