It's not just a sign. The million dollars includes landscaping, road and sidewalk improvements. I have no problems whatsoever with this project. It's going to be a great gateway to the university!

Don't get me wrong, I love to see esthetic upgrades and improvements to infrastructure that makes life easier for pedestrians and vehicle traffic alike.

That being said, I don't see this adding anything new, simply sprucing up what is already existing, and considering the financial difficulties the UofR faces I don't see how there is any kind of ROI on this expenditure. They could perhaps spin it as maintanance, but I think the shock all has to do with the price tag.

But I'm sure it will look nice for a little while, and will tie into the signage and landscaping theme they plan on using and which they already budgeted for this. (but $1M?!)

I love the plan! I think it will really help with the look and feel of the University... but I have the same concern. One MILLION dollars? Did they tender this job out and go with the lowest bid? It seems like this job could be done for far less money. Concrete work is expensive and landscaping is very labour intensive, but I'd like to see a breakdown of where that money is going. It feels like the U of R is getting fleeced by a opportunistic contractor and the U of R board of directors could care less.

Since it will be made of stainless steel --- it will last forever. Moreover, stainless steel is very $$$$; it'll be worth it. (Providing they construct only one.)

Reading the article, it seems that they sent this out for bids and they all came in way over budget, so they ended up going with the lowest bidder and tayloring it to be more affordable than the original quote.

I know a million doesn't buy much anymore, but to put it in perspective Saskatoon is spending $1.25M for streetscaping on 20th st for both sides of the road on the entire length between Ave E and Ave F and that includes new curbs and sidewalks, furniture (benches, waste receptacles, lamps), artwork and landscaping (trees and planters). And many people were miffed at the cost.

I too am curious to see how the cost of this project breaks down.

Here's the current state of things at the 13th Ave Safeway. My cellphone wasn't fond of the low, bright sun. It can't be seen in this picture, but the new building structure is completed up until Scotiabank. I assume they're going to be moving Scotiabank out into a trailer soon so they can demo that section and extend the new building for them?

Honestly, it strikes me as a little ridiculous. From the article...

Money for that comes from the university’s capital budget, not its operating budget.

That, Button said, means the project will not cause tuition to go up, staff positions to be eliminated or programs to be cut — even though the capital budget took a 25-per-cent cut in the 2013-14 provincial budget.

The university is having issues with crazy overtime being publically exposed, lack of parking (esp with two new residences being built), programs have been cut, dorms having flooding problems, etc. It seems an odd time to be investing a lot in signage. Maybe I'm just not a fan of their priorities.

I personally think this should have been done along time ago. The signage right now is some old stone signage that you cant even see, too low to the ground and pretty uggly. Let alone the one on the ring road which hardly anyone notices or even knows there is a sign on the ring road that says U of R. Even innovation place is redoing there signage and landscaping to there entrance. Looks way better

Yeah, I walk passed it every single day and just noticed it. This is good news in my opinion. When I was touring universities one of things that drew me in was the aesthetics of the campus. Regina doesn't really have the greatest aesthetics (yet.. heres hoping for a better future).

One of my biggest pet peeve's is when people don't think general landscape is a priority at the school. If there was no beautification, people would go to other schools. I think this is definitely a good thing

REGINA — Regina & District Chamber of Commerce CEO John Hopkins was named executive of the year for communities with more than 100,000 in population at the Canadian Chamber of Commerce annual general meeting last weekend in Kelowna, B.C.

“Last year was a great year (for the chamber),’’ Hopkins said in an interview Thursday.

“We did some very positive things in terms of immigration,’’ he said, referring to the chamber’s participation in a laborforce mission to Ireland with the provincial government.

He's contributing to the forum by posting links that are postive and are a direct result of the great economic boom Regina is experiencing. Any way, does anybody have any idea or even heard of any rumors of what's going on in the ground floor of the gardens on rose and centre square place? Whatever goes there will add a lot to the street life in those areas. Also I will post update pics of the towers at the university. That project is progressing nicely.

Hey guys I live right in edgwater in the northwest and on my drive to work on 9th Ave and courtney I notice there lots of tracter equipment out in the field doing lots of digging and stuff is that for the new neighborhood development?
