Great minds think alike. You lined them up better anyways!

For me, I like the updated version much better.
I do not like how the windows have a horizontal striped appearance.
The newer version looks more modern and up to date compared to the old version and a lot more detailed.

I am guessing that the updated version is much more accurate. As was pointed out yesterday the number of floor on the tower that the PAC lobby cuts into is four on the latest rendering, and six on the original. Considering the PAC isn't going to be six stories tall, the updated rendering make much more sense.

It's just a glass rectangle. Don't think I'll ever understand developers who are willing to spemd millions of dollars for copycat bland mediocrity.

Agreed. This reminds me of the buildings I see and then immediately forget in all the cities I visit. This design would have been revolutionary many decades ago. Now it's just boring. On the other hand, I guess any city needs a bunch of boring buildings so the great ones stand out.

And since I'm usually a pedestrian in downtown, I care most about how it will interact on street level.

In any case, didn't someone once mention here that this building (or the original rendering, at least) is a copy of another building, perhaps in San Francisco or somewhere? I work at the Tribune and sit next to the guy who wrote that article. I told him to ask them about that, but when he did they denied that it was based on any other building.

Am I just remembering the conversation incorrectly?

On a slightly tangential note, I just noticed the cars in the rendering: a corvette, a BMW, what looks like a Ferrari, possibly a Mercedes. I know renderings are usually somewhat… aspirational, but it seems the architects may not have actually driven the streets of SLC.

You are correct. I was just looking through the forum a few days ago and found that building. It is very similar to the 111 Tower. I will try and find it for you. If anyone else can locate it please post it...

I found it...

Here is a link to a small slide presentation and story about the tower.

Well either Hamilton Partners is lying and saying it's not based on another building or they are simply dumb, and believing the architect if that's what they are telling them. To me, while not an exact replica, it sure does have a very large number of similarities. Maybe the author of the article should approach Hamilton with the SF image and ask them if they've seen that building before.

Problem is, most of SLC's taller buildings are boring.

Thanks!

And yeah, I'll tell that reporter to confront them about it next time they talk.

Also, I agree with you Comrade Reynolds about most of our architecture being boring. Hopefully someday they're be a really standout building...

OMG guys, what's with all this talk about the architect lying! The architect is not lying! The two buildings are similar, but it does not mean that the architect is copying another one of their buildings. If that were the case, then Moshe Safdie copied his Vancouver library. Often times the architect or developer will use a similar building they have designed to allow for economic efficiency. They can save money and effort by using or modifying similar drawing, details, etc. The base is similar; the overall height is similar; and the transparent look is similar. BUT, they are not copying it!

Thanks for the info. It's nice to hear more infill housing going on in the Gateway. Hopefully, it will be designed to urban/mixed-use with some commercial/shops/restaurants at the base. And, hopefully we won't be getting those suburban stucco pieces of — that were built next to the freeway.

Just one more note about 111: some of you have commented that this looks like a boring design. The renderings may seem like it will be boring, but the general design is very refined, elegant, and transparent. Ever hear of "less is more"? Well, oftentimes, less can be boring, but a good architect/architecture firm will know how to make this beautiful.

This is when I am for Eminent Domain. The interest of the public will benefit from a new development there. Or maybe the city can enforce removal of the abandoned EAB because of blight.

I in no way support the use of eminent domain in the Carl's Jr case, possibly the EAB location and only maybe, but it sounds like the EAB site could be purchased. It's not as if the owners of the Carl's Jr site are letting their property get run down, and are refusing to sell. They are simply refusing to sell at the price that the RDA has offered. When the market is right a developer with the right amount of money will be able to buy and redevelop the parcel. If the RDA buys the EAB lot in the mean time, then they could offer the property to the developer as part of the redevelopment.

By boring I think he means that all ( but the Wells Fargo Tower ) of our skyscrapers are square boxes. Not much effect in shaping these buildings.
