Internet exchange may offer faster service for rural customers
By: Martin Cash
Posted: 09/26/2013 1:00 AM

ON Thursday afternoon, a coalition of community partners and the Canadian Internet Registration Authority fired up the country's fifth Internet exchange point in Winnipeg.
An Internet exchange point (IXP) is a switch within the Internet that allows multiple networks, such as three or more Internet service providers, to connect directly with each other.
Shaw and MTS, the two largest Internet service providers in Manitoba, are not part of the Manitoba Internet Exchange (MBIX), so most Manitobans will not experience any difference in their Internet service.

But Bill Reid, president of MBIX, said some of the rural Internet service providers have joined and those users might experience some faster service. Reid said it takes some time for an IXP to attract users.

i've taken part in installing portions of the inferstructure for this

Funny you say that. Winnipeg does just happen to be a test market for a lot of companies.

Expression of interest is out for the "Park City Plaza" development at the old east yards site. I think the city is making a huge mistake not routing Ed Schreyer Parkway down the Ravelston right of way to Plessis instead of dead ending at Regent. Just seems like a dumb idea to me, no continuity. So they'll dump more traffic onto Regent instead of utilizing Plessis. But Plessis is supposed to be part of the beltway project if it ever gets completed. I guess they've just put the kibosh on that plan through Transcona completely. The NIMBY's really done Transcona in.

Also, something many people don't know, Old Dutch is an American founded company:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Old_Dutch_Foods (The company began as Old Dutch Products Co. in 1934. They originated in St. Paul, Minnesota, but moved to Minneapolis in 1937. In 1968, they moved again, this time to Roseville, Minnesota, where they remain today)
That is weird, because if you grab a bag of Old Dutch Ariba Chips there is a little history written on the back. The little paragraph begins with "Founded in Winnipeg Manitoba" Or something along those lines.

Looking at the Canadian Old Dutch web site FAQ section, it says opened in Winnipeg April 1954.

The US site says they stared in 1934 so it took them 20 years to come up to Canada.

does anyone know anything about the history of the lot where H2O Waterfront is? on Pike Projects website, it mentions that they won the design to build on that site with a design from when they were at BIOS Architecture.

the design (looking north on Waterfront):

from http://www.pikeprojects.ca

now, obviously this design didn't get built for some reason. in the past week or so, though, Pike posted a rendering of what looks like a revised rendering of this old proposal. is it possible that with H2O struggling so much, the other portion of the land is going to be developed as shown below? or is this something completely different?

from http://www.pikeprojects.ca

there are a few more photos of each proposal on their website.

Has anyone else noticed the Dollarama style stone facade they're placing on The Grove's new lounge project at River and Osborne? I hope this trend ends soon. The windows are uncovered though, and it looks like they took down a bunch of walls. Nice open space.

Hey! That's an Etienne Gaboury design you're talking about!

...but seriously though, that stage really does look out of place now. I know that it's probably heretical to admit it, but I wouldn't miss it if it were gone.

By the way, thanks for the great pics of the CMHR, TV and 1ajs.

Something looks out of place here?

Source

Actually it looks very Salisbury house..ish?

Anyway, an update considering the location and context of the other building may be in order, although I have no idea what the partnership with the Bank is? Kinda like the Portage/Main barriers, what's the agreement on the stage and sponsership and the term involved?

I've heard the guys at the forks say on many occasions that they detest it as well...i remember hearing one of them say they didn't care which design for the CMHR won as long as it obliterated the stage.

the original gaboury design was intended to have the land burm up to the roof and go right over it...like a hollowed out cave....it got 'value engineered' to become darth vadar's helmet in terra cotta.
