Incredible news for Fort McMurray! Apparently the rendering for the tower and bridge have yet to be revealed, but it should be relatively soon!

Yes, that's a 5 storey high school, very rare.

I guess that's what happens when you're left with a postage-stamp site.

Doesn't look like they've incorporated King George into the design, unless it's on the backside? (or is this still what they planned to build to replace Scott Park?) That heritage debate will heat up now.

Not that this can't work, but the whole issue has been handled very poorly by the school board. No planning ahead for potential future needs, sold the Scott Park building for a quick (and cheap) buck, and a chilly relationship with that other disfunctional city body which could have partnered up to help offset large expropriation costs to get the old high school back.

If the lower city demographics eventually swing back and another new school is needed, this same story will play out again.

This is a new proposal that was announced today for Halifax. It is certainly unique - but is that good or bad? The owner/developer definitely plans to go ahead. They are currently expanding the 22 storey TD tower in Halifax so they have the finances to proceed. They hope for approval by the end of this year and construction start in 2015.

It is mostly new construction and will involve the demolition of the Royal Bank building in Halifax and restoration of heritage buildings with some restoration being just the facades.

It will be twin towers of what appears to be 23 storeys and 500,000 square feet of new space - office, hotel and condos. They are permitted the proposed height at this location - so no groups can oppose the height (as a few groups often do in Halifax).

There certainly is a lot of construction underway and planned for good, old Halifax.

That was pretty much my first impression - I think I like it.

I think the cantilevered section and slanting glass panes might be a bit too obtrusive though.

I don't think it has feelings.

I do think there'S a little too much going on that facades though.

This is one of the most avant-garde proposals I've seen in Halifax, and while the outside-the-box thinking is exciting, each individual element of this proposal seems like a workable idea but as a whole it's completely incoherent. The treatment of the heritage properties is awkward at best. If this is fine-tuned JUST RIGHT it could be fantastic, but otherwise... yikes. I think it would be held up as a case study of why post-modernism should not be allowed in Halifax.

Then again, it might work well with its surroundings. I'd be interested in seeing a rendering from a further distance, and where the adjacent buildings aren't "ghosts".

Either way though, with the treatment of the heritage properties, this one's gonna be a doozy.

Overall I like it too. But that dark slanted glass keeps saying "accordion" to me

... might it look better if that part was closer in style to the upper section of the back tower?

^My thoughts as well. The accordion bit looks a bit tacked on. Doesn't seem to relate to the rest of the development or its neighbours. I can appreciate the value of a little juxtaposition but the accordion just seems unnecessary.

I'd also like to see more in the way of retail integrated at street level.

Other than that it looks like a development with a lot of potential and certainly a great addition for Halifax.
