I checked out Ruby Thai today at the Toronto Eaton Centre.

Very nice! This will be an excellent addition to Champlain Place..........

My wife went to the Hallmark at Champlain this past weekend and plenty of merchandise was on clearance, lots of greeting cards missing too. She asked the employee and was told that they will know by the end of the week if they are closing. What?!

If this place closes and another beauty store opens, I will just give up. I think that this mall is not a mall anymore; it's just beauty, accessories and clothing for women; most successful malls have a variety of tenants and clientele. Lots of variety at Mic Mac Mall and I believe they are doing better than Champlain. I'm not sure if it's the right strategy for Champlain, it's just too much, soon only women will ever go there.

Oh yes, Champlain is clean and shiny, but Champlain used to be busier than it's been in the past few years... I don't want to pick on Swarovski, but when was the last time you saw someone there. Every time I walk in front of this place I think to myself, how can this place stay open? This is only one example, many others could be named...
P.S. I understand the aspect of sales per sq ft and what it means on paper for a mall, but still.
With the opening of Target and Marshalls, more and more shopping will be shifted out of Champlain.

I agree with you, Champlain Place is perilously close to becoming a women's only fashion mall. It is nice to see all these higher end national retailers moving in there, but for the average Joe (as opposed to Josephine), it is getting harder and harder to find a reason to go there. More variety in retailers would be appreciated. Most of the recent additions have been jewelry, handbags and cosmetics........

As for Hallmark, isn't that right next to Bizou/Laura Secord/Fruits & Passions? They're all moving to different parts of the mall. If Hallmark were added into the equation, now we are starting to consolidate a large potential retail space on a prominent corner. I wonder if something "big" could be looking to move in there?

Probably something like Victoria's Secret, which would be yet another women's store (albeit a very high profile, in-demand one).

Victoria's Secret might be possible, but even with Hallmark added in, the floor area would still be less than other VS stores I have seen elsewhere in the country. Also, La Senza is just across the hallway, and that brand is owned by VS. Pink might be possible, but have you ever heard of a Pink opening in exclusion of VS?

Personally, I would wonder about Banana Republic. Moncton has a number of other affiliated stores in the city (Gap/Gap Kids/Baby Gap, Old Navy and Banana Republic Factory Store), and Moncton is the base for the Gap regional manager for NB/PEI. The combined space being cleared out on this corner is now about right for a BR store.

Another possibility would be Hollister, but icetea93 has previously stated that she thinks this unlikely. Still, the store footprint would now be about right.......

Banana Republic is possible, but Hollister I don't think so. Abercrombie which owns Hollister has been downsizing recently and closing stores, so that option is very unlikely. That brand is not what it used to be...

Cabela's will build a store on Mapleton. You will see some of my other post have come true.
You can bet on this one!
Cabela's would be huge for the city if this rumour is correct. It would be a destination store of just marginally lesser calibre than LL Bean (albeit with a definite hunting/fishing/camping focus). People would flock here from all over the Maritimes to go there. Whaler further stated that this rumoured store will cost $35M to build! Cabela's stores tend to be very large..........

http://www.cabelas.ca/

Stay tuned on this hot rumour..........

Cabela's would fit in well in Moncton, but that $35M figure just can't be right!

Cabela's plans to open in every province in the country so this could very well be true. For Moncton to get one before Halifax would be a huge draw, I'll admit. They tend to disregard population in choosing where and when they open, so it would not surprise me to see them open in Moncton first. Though I think eventually both will have stores based on their aggressive expansion plans.

This rumor is going around the office. A co-worker heard last night that Cabela’s purchased steel for a new building from a Moncton based supplier. This is second hand knowledge so take it for what it is worth.

Well, this is certainly supportive evidence. Also, based on some of Whaler's previous posts, I believe he actually could have some insider knowledge here. A major question is "where on Mapleton would it go". Cabela's tend to be very large stores..........

I would guess at the northeast corner of Lady Ada and Mapleton, across from the medical/dental complex.

This is entirely possible. My dentist has his office in 585 Mapleton however, and he has told me on a couple of occasions that there is a building slated for that corner which will include a TD Bank and an NBLC outlet. I'm not really sure about this though, as I don't think there is enough residential in the immediate surrounding area to justify either a neighbourhood bank or liquor store.

Other possibilities:

- Mapleton Centre - absolutely not, there are no pads of sufficient size left in the development that are large enough for a Cabela's.

- Mapleton Crossing - possible. There may be enough land here for a Cabela's, and it has the bonus of being immediately adjacent to the TCH.

- Day & Ross - also possible. Again, the advantage would be accessibility and visibility from the TCH. A lot might depend on whether or not Costco has some kind of purchase agreement for the land. Somebody on the forums (I forget who) said that Costco did purchase new land, but has no immediate plans to move.

- Next to the Hampton Inn - there is a large block of land paralleling the TCH on the north side just to the west of the Hampton Inn which is for sale. Again, great visibility from the TCH.

You never know, here are a few pictures of a recently opened Cabela's in Columbus, Ohio

All photos from the Columbus Dispatch newspaper

Kinda reminds you of a certain outfitting store in Freeport, Maine doesn't it.........

Anyway, I think that we have just solved the problem of Champlain Place turning into a "fashion mall". All Joe has to do is drop the missus off at Champlain and then head over to Cabela's.

Well based on where they are in Canada, I think they go for the largest concentration of rednecks...

Canadian Locations:

Edmonton (North), Alberta
Edmonton (South), Alberta
Regina
Saskatoon
Winnipeg
Barrie, Ontario (2014)

I love Moncton, but we are more redneck than urban. We (NB) are more rural than any other province in Canada, check it out! More than 60% of our population are living outside cities. No about it, we are who we are. Rural and outdoorsy doesn't just mean redneck.

Whatever it means, it's a good thing for the retail sector in Greater Moncton.

Hey I have purchase a few thing from Swarovki before, I think It's great to have high end store However I do agree that you need a certain balance of stores, not everyone can afford saphora or coach, and sadly your not in Vegas here so its mainly for the locals not filthy rich tourists.
