FI is very confident in YEG as its launching 4 flights per week. That's the same as it initially launched with cities such as YYZ, DEN etc. and by stating it aims for year round service shows the confidence the airline has in Edmonton. YVR is twice weekly seasonal (with the possibility of year round), ANC is twice weekly seasonal etc.

I suspect marketing will be heavily deployed.

I also see they are hiring for a regional marketing manager in Edmonton. Maybe this person should get some banners deployed into a few Calgary malls?

On a sidenote I don't think anyone can deny the huge gap this route fills for easy connections to several of the top 5 European cities amongst others.

My read of that reporters words...are that YYC is going to get a flight to Dubai. YEG may seem some new open skies route(s)...but nothing could be more important that the route for YYC to Dubai. That would break off a leg and thigh of the AC chicken. And while I am no supporter of YYC - I simply hate AC for fucking Edmonton and if they loose a whole limb I will do a happy dance. Hell I might even fly on it just because.

YYC-DXB will not happen before YYZ-DXB becomes daily.

I really can't see EK launching YYC before YVR anyway. But then, how can both YVR, YYC and YYZ support service to DXB. It's a bit too much especially for an ULH type of route.

there might be a chance for a YVR-YYC-DXB route, but YYZ needs to go to at least daily before either YYC or YVR would be considered by EK. either way I don't think YYC could support DXB by itself..

Clearly that report is telling us that Stephen Harper is laying the groundwork to make his hometown of Calgary the new superhub of Canada...

Agreed that we won't see EK in YYC until they get their YYZ daily flight.

Could the YEG-YYC-DXB route be the one that is rumored on this thread?

An international route shared by both Alberta Cities?

^ EK is not known for operating such routes. They have in the past, don't get me wrong. But lately, they have been primarily flying dedicated flights/routes.

But once again, isn't getting daily to YYZ more pressing for EK than adding 2 stations (probably 3 times weekly). YYC-YEG-DXB is not ideal at all, especially for business passengers unless they can pull a daily - which is too much capacity for our market.

If there is a political push from a prominant politician (Prime Minister) anything is possible.

You can have access to YYZ if you include YYC/YEG as well?

wishfull thinking
