Isn't this the place that's only open for lunch?

Finished the rest of the Long's Chinese food last night. Rinsed it off a bit (I know, loser) then added some sweet red peppers, some oyster sauce and re-fried it all together and served it over rice. It still had some serious spice but was manageable and delicious.

Yes. I planned ahead and went before school started again. My wife was hoping to go tonight, so I had to disappoint her.

If you like it really hot then Mucho Burrito is the place to go as they are featuring a ghost pepper burrito until the Day of the Dead which is November 2.
I thought Scotch Bonnets or Habaneros were the hottest peppers but the Ghost pepper hits 1,000,000 on the Scoville heat rating scale!
Jalapenos only rate at 8,000.

I don't mean to call out KW but we got takeout last night- that makes 4x eating there or getting takeout since they opened- and got the diced chicken with peanuts aka kung pao. It wasn't that hot. The spicy chicken at Han's is hotter. It was DELICIOUS, don't get me wrong, but it wasn't the hottest thing I've ever eaten by a long shot. Now I don't know if this wasn't some "be gentle to the white guy" thing because I also got the tofu with soy sauce, which is 100% mild but very tasty, and the fried cabbage with dried chilies and sweet and sour- this would be exactly what they call "kung pao cabbage" at Hans IF THEY HAD INCLUDED THE CHILIES. There were none! Just cabbage, garlic and vinegar. It was tasty enough especially as it cooled off and the cabbage got some of that sour taste but it needed heat. I have no idea why they left out the chilies but I really think they help back the heat- I will be sure to let them know next time that we like it hot. FWIW the chicken and cabbage combined was 🞵🞵🞵🞵🞵🞵🞵 amazing.

In Calgary the single hottest thing I've ever eaten was a pork basil at White Elephant which I ordered- God help me- "hot." Do not do this at White Elephant unless you can live with the consequences. It was epic but painful. Second place would be when I got the green papaya salad at Jackie's Thai and also ordered hot.

I've had vindaloo at several places in Calgary and have never found it to be horribly hot but that might be because I always have it with some raita.

Hottest thing I've ever had is the "Bull vs the Volcano" wings at the Bull & Finch pub, they make the sauce from Habanero seeds I think, and you have to sign a waiver before they will bring them out. So f'n hot I had half of one, and I used to eat suicide wings all the time.

Will have to try Long's, I've been looking for a good Chinese place in the West Beltline (usually go to Dragon Pearl in Inglewood).

Long's is solid Szechuan, nothing at all like Dragon Pearl or any Chinese resto in Calgary aside from Szechuan up on 16th Ave N. Even Han's/Great Taste/Delicious Country are all sort of Taiwanese/Szechuan hybrids.

I don't like hot for the sake of hot so I'd never order something with eg scotch bonnets just to grow hair on my chest. Have more than I need already. I do love spicy, tasty food where the spice actually adds to the flavour of the dish.

Oh good, I love Szechuan! I also do very much enjoy western style Chinese food too, so any suggestions on that front?

I don't eat hot for the sake of eating hot anymore, my stomach can't handle it anymore haha.

Can't remember the name of the place, but there's a hole in the wall on 16th ave and around 4st NW that does wicked Szechuan. I'll try to find via google maps when I get a chance.

Be very careful with your decision here... many have regretted the decision to prove their manhood.

I'm happy with about a 5,000 rating on the Scoville scale!
Like Rusty said, I like heat to add flavour but not over power the meal.
The best remedies for a mouth on fire are bread, rice, beer and dairy. Drinking water seems to add to the burn.

Yeah the hotness is oil based and water just spreads it around.

I’m not sure if it’s been mentioned here but the Lion’s Den on 17th has closed permanently.

That'd be Szechuan Restaurant. 320 16th Ave NW.

Ate there once. Basket of burnt on the outside, raw on the inside fries after Gilchrist waxed rhapsodic about how perfect their fries were. The rest of the meal could have come out of cans. Horrible.

Last year, my wife had the hottest ghost pepper burrito from Mucho Burrito, it wasn't too hot. She thought it could have been hotter. She gave me a bite, which was hot, but not even close to absurdly so. My wife was a little disappointed with some that supposedly was made with ghost peppers.

When I ate there the food was pretty good, but the real attraction there was the owner, who will literally talk your ear off given half a chance, and his eclectic decor. One big negative needs to be said about the owner, however, whose name I’m currently drawing a blank on, and that’s that he was raised in a very strict catholic home and has some anti-gay opinions. He’s a character and an old salt, but every now and then he’ll say something that makes you wince. One of his favourite topics is his hot sauce, which he claims will cure cancer, but he also claims that it works like 🞵🞵🞵🞵🞵🞵, and that comment made me wonder if his issues with homosexuality may be more personal in nature. I’m certainly not saying that everyone who has ED is gay, but something just kind of clicked for me when he said that. Anyway, the guy is a character and I wonder if he'll be able to stay away from the restaurant business. He's going to drive his wife crazy.

Wasn't the land / building for sale? Did it sell?
