I tried out Long's tonight and can happily second Rusty's recommendation. This is the kind of Chinese restaurant I've been wishing for for years. The fact that it is a short walk from my home is a huge bonus. I always suspected that this kind of place, if it existed at all in Calgary, would be found in some strip mall hidden in the far NE.

I'm glad to hear that they're busy-ish after only a week open. That spot is a restaurant graveyard. But with the quality and price of food at Long's I'm hoping they're here for as long as I am.

Thanks for the heads-up and review, I definitely have to check this place out!

Does anyone know what that bar on Harvest Hills and 96Ave is? it used to be the Flight Deck and then StoneHill, but I think it's changed again.

Happy for Long's Chinese Restaurant. I was wondering why there was no chinese restaurants around my area except for kings......which only has a few seats and is mostly a takeout place.

Thanks for the info.

It's now the Canadian Brewhouse, which is a chain with mostly locations in Northern Alberta. It's not great...

I got some gwai lo Chinese from King's a couple of weeks ago- chicken fried rice and chicken w/ broccoli- and it was vile. I should have taken reviews on Urbanspoon about it being worse than it used to be seriously. But Long's is really, really different from Kings and the like (and btw of you want some ginger beef or whatever there is also Ginger Beef Express on 14 St by that fish and chip place). BTW I got dan dan noodles for lunch at Long's the other day and it was spectacular- they don't hold back on the chili and the noodles were done perfectly.

Try this place nearby, Fiddlers Green. It's fairly good to sit outside at - the partition blocks off the view of the Mac mostly. The food, beer and price are all OK.

I was recently searching on Urbanspoon for restaurant options in Bridgeland.
I still can't believe how highly "liked" Spicy Hut is!

want a laugh? Here's an older Urbanspoon review by my roommate Chels, of Spicy Hut "Peking and Thai House" located at the bottom of 4th St in Bridgeland.

Urbanspoon photo by Krunk April 23, 2011

This was one of the worst delivered meals we've ever had. period
The speediness of delivery, literally ~15-20 minutes from the time of call should have been a harbinger of things to come.

86% of people are on crack. That was by far one of the worst meals I have EVER had. And to the person who said the peanut curry tofu was delicious; you sir lack taste buds. The tofu was vaguely reminiscent of soggy toilet paper. Would I ever go to this restaurant again? Maybe. If every other single restaurant and grocery store in a 100km radius spontaneously blew up. But then again, I'm sure I could track down some SPAM that would prove to be quite the culinary delight in comparison.

Has anyone tried the Cambodian place at the Crossroads?

Mango Shiva men's room wallpaper by LUMIN8, on Flickr

I had dinner at Mango Shiva tonight. The calamari starter was a big mistake but the chicken curry was very good.

I came home Thursday night after 6 weeks away and it was sad driving down 4th St and seeing so many places still in the dark from the flood. Earls Tin Palace is saying it will be January when they re-open.

We got some salad rolls there that were amazing and a veg curry that was one of the worst things I've ever tasted. Haven't tried it since because there's so much I know I'll love at crossroads.

Hubby brought home some momos, chili chicken and chili paneer from Himalayan tonight- it was SO GOOD! The paneer had this Chinese flavour- really different and delicious. Momos are veggie dumplings and they come with this tomato-coriander dipping sauce, just insanely delicious.

Ok, be careful with longs, VERY SPICY!! but very good. My whole face was burning. We took it home and re-cooked it over some rice to soften the spice.

We ordered the chicken with panut sauce.....SPICY!
and the spicy shrimp, you guessed it.......SPICY!

You have to eat it with rice or noodles- lots of starch!

Thanks for checking them out. How busy were they?

I went to Crossroads craving Mexican and ended up having Korean. After I ate my beef bulgogi (which was ok but not great), I saw the Cambodian place and the salad rolls did look good.

Had lunch again today at Long's. Shredded pork with garlic sauce lunch special, comes with rice and lovely Szechuan pickles which are an acquired taste but made in house and delicious. Terrible taste-free bowl of this egg drop soup with corn was not necessary but the rest was delicious. Just under $10.

Gotta try the ma po tofu and the chicken with peanuts (aka kung pao)!

chicken with peanuts is "holy f spicy" beware....... there are enough dried pepper flakes to kill a sheltered white person who has never had hot food before.

My wife and I went to a Malaysian restaurant up in the NE a few weeks ago called Tropical Delight Noodle house. I had the laksa which was spicy with a nice coconut broth. My wife had the roti with beef, which is a favourite of both of ours, and it was a absolutely amazing. House made sambal was delicious. We were full and spent $20. It has a 96% rating on Urbanspoon. Super friendly family run restaurant. Highly recommend.

That's one of the most glowing reviews of any kind of Chinese food in Calgary I've ever read.
