via Winnipeg??? I think these planes have the range to fly nonstop to YEG and YYC.

Max range 5,463 km (2,950 nmi)
Max cruise speed Mach 0.82 (870 km/h, 470 kn, 541 mph)

Those numbers are absolutely staggering. We are looking at an over 10 fold increase since 1995, and approaching 20 if the numbers hold up (1.35 million projected in 2013 vs 73000 in 1995). What is even more impressive is that huge number of people flying into the region don't even use this airport but fly right to the number of private airports in the region.

I'm too lazy to look, do they have a similar table for aircraft movements?

YMM is a growing market. Should YEG get a bigger piece of their connecting traffic...Yes. But right now, we don't even have enough added capacity to serve the local market. So YMM is becoming less and less dependent on YEG.

Ideally, it would be nice to channel more pax through YEG, but given the high yields airlines can generate directly from YMM, you are likely to see more flights to YYZ and YYC (and maybe more to DEN) in the future.

One big problem is that AC treats YEG as a secondary transit point (regardless of proximity to YMM). But at the end, YEG will continue to grow regardless.

Amazing numbers for EIA. Looks like we're Getting the extra capacity filled in Domestic and Transborder numbers.

Good for Fort Mac as well. I don't see their growth hurting YEG it's good seeing airlines adding capacity.

Looking forward to seeing what happens next year with AA and FI entering our market adding more competition. Right my gut tells me UAL has the two morning departures are to catch as much traffic from YEG with out hurting YYC's catchment. Seeing the prices and the capacity you know they could easily add another flight; but it would probably take passengers away from YYC's numerous flights.

There is also 1/2 +mil using EIA for flights to camps up north but not through the main terminal. As to why they're not tallied as passengers?

These are passengers for work up north mainly.

Correct me if im wrong, AC western office is in Calgary, so one just have to clue in the dots... That is why i hope Porter moves to the west and ideally, Edmonton as a hub. Hope EIA is perusing through here or C2E and get their proposal and welcome mats ready. Should have approached yesterday already.

They aren't tallied because they are private charters, you or me can not purchase a ticket on those flights.

EIA is pursuing these opportunities...they have plans I'm sure if they want to hit their goal of 10 million passengers by 2020 per their annual report. That is a tall order going the route we are at the moment, near impossible.

It's a challenging order for sure. EIA stepped out of the box for the first time with Icelandic route. They need to do this with Porter. This airline's operation was under the radar and became a threat to AC. We need to be under the radar and approach these type of companies as we're always get ignored by the traditionals.
Internationally, the same ideology need applied. Rather than approach destinations that every other cities are after, we want to slide in the back door. For example, rather eyeing Hong Kong or Tokyo for Asia, how about Guang Chau(Zhau). It is a top 5 metro city in the world but not famous as Beijing, Shanghai, Hong Kong, Tokyo, or Seoul. Our Chances are much stronger when we're not competing with other cities.

It is not all about us. As Icelandair stated, they were looking for a nice market...somewhere they could tap into that was being under served...and travellers would not blink twice about connecting 1 stop to Europe. That market has to be able to fill planes - and this market can do that.

If we apply that same "logic" (business strategy), it seems to me we need to find an airline (budget or alliance airline) looking to move into (Western) North America from Asia and Eastern Europe that has either has a similar business strategy or package this one up and deliver it to them. Ideally they will run the same type of am/pm HUB schedule that Icelandair is using in KEF - which is flow through, fast turn around (quick connect). Top of my list for Europe is Air Berlin to Berlin and to BBI the new terminal that is to open with alliance and low cost carriers connections.

I do not see Air Berlin entering our market before other destinations, making that unrealistic.

You say it isn't all about us? I would say it is all about us. If people are the ones that hold the money, money talks and that is why FI see potential in our market, that is why UAL offers flights to IAH from YEG, not just YYC, and AC to LHR not just YYC. They know that people would choose another option is available. In 2006 when AC introduced LHR it was strongly rumoured that the move was because BA was about to enter the market due to the amount of demand they were getting from people and business in the Edmonton market.

I think I know what you're saying though...essentially airlines work off their hubs and alliances?

I am saying that Icelandair is handicapped being where they are - and to make it work for them using KEF they must tap into markets that will accept that routing via KEF with the 1 stop connection. If given the choice, travellers generally prefer non-stop flights to continental Europe and anywhere for that matter. So Icelandair need an underserved market (or vulnerable market) to "appreciate" the service they provide. For them this is the type of market they must operate from and for us we have no choice - at least for now. That is why they are not going to ever offer a service to YYC. If AC were to offer FRA nonstop from YEG in February - that would seriously effect the viability of Icelandair in this market. 4 days a week could be 1 day or no days in a hurry. The reality is there are only so many people that will look at the lowest price point and forgive the inconvenience of having to stop enroute and change planes. I do understand that to some destinations they may arrive earlier than routing through YYZ or YYC. I would think the majority would simply opt for the nonstop on AC to FRA in this affluent market and if AC do fly the route, than the time issue, at least to FRA is less.

That said and in the absence of AC to FRA - we will be on the Icelandair flights at least 2 times next year. And we are not going to FRA - but to CDG and to AMS.

I do not think your analyses is correct. Iceland are picked our market because YEG is under served and an easy target. Over all FI has added pretty major routes in the past few years Den, Bos, YYZ, YVR....

They are not going in to only under served markets.

If YEG does get a flight to continental Europe will it kill Icelands service? Depends. FI offers very attractive pricing that majors usual do not match.

FI only serves a handful of cities....and YEG's requirement is far beyond what FI can deliver.

A new entrant (if that ever happens) will not kill FI's route. It will serve a different market altogether.

Think of the thousands of pax who want to fly to places in Europe like Brussels, Berlin, Milan, Warsaw, Prague, Nice etc...and then Africa and Middle East and so on...FI can only catch a sliver of the YEG market.

On average, there are over 11,000 pax departing YEG each day during the summer. Think of all places they might be going. And FI will be offering less than 800 seats a week (so roughly 115 seats per day)...SO really just over 1% additional capacity.

I agree with dansk. FI serves major cities in the US and Europe and many of the city pairs have non-stop flights already. I believe FI's advantage is pricing and service and perhaps to a small extent the free stopover in Reykjavik.

On the other hand i also agree with EdmTrekker. Air Berlin would be a contender in my mind as long as the connections are convenient and BBI is used. I don't know how many people would back track to London via Berlin (maybe Amsterdam, Zurich, etc.) but everything south and east would be great. Air Berlin are carving up the Polish market and LO has already pulled their WAW-TXL flights as an example.

Judging by how many people were on my last flight for YEG through LHR to Berlin. I would suspect the Air Berlin flights may be quite popular.
