Quick update from Mary Brown's. They advised me they are having a base building problem... should be sorted out soon. Hopefully it doesn't delay it much longer.

I went to Big League Burgers today and IMO, they are hands down the best burger joint in town. If you see me ordering a burger at any other burger place in town, you have the go ahead to shoot me in the leg.

Porchmouse, if you are really saying that Big League is comparable to Five Guys, then that is very high praise indeed, as Five Guys is considered near the apex of the gourmet burger world. Is Big League really that good?

EDIT - I just checked out the Five Guys menu online, and it is virtually identical........

I was in Bangor on early this week and Five Guys did not disapoint me and I loves the concept for that restaurant and I wish that they would come to Moncton. The spot that I could see them go would be on Mapleton.

It sounds like Big League is nearly a clone of Five Guys, with food of comparable quality. If so, then do we really need to have a Five Guys in town?

This sounds like a replay of the "frogurt wars" Goji's replicated the business model of Menchi's and rapidly opened four locations in the metro area. Despite this, Menchi's will be opening a location on Champlain St too. Will there be room for both? Time will tell......

If Five Guys ever comes to the city, I hope they will give Big League a 1-2 year lead in order to establish their business. I always like to see local chains succeed.......

The taste I find very similar.

Enjoy! When you try it let us know what you think.
Well, now they have bags of potatoes stacked in the restaurant. It would appear that the cloning process is very nearly complete.....

As for my review, the burgers were indeed very good as were the fries. I would give it a solid thumbs up, but as a personal preference, I would still choose Relish instead.

Relish suits my tastes better, but since Big League is within walking distance and Relish is all the way downtown, I imagine I will end up going to Big League more.

Another new tenant for the Trinity Dental Group mini mall at the corner of Trinity Drive and Mountain Road. Klozet Clothing Boutique will be opening this fall. This should complement Cara Shoes next door quite nicely.....

This strip mall will now have 100% occupancy and has actually turned out quite nicely.

Tenants are (or will be):
- Goji's Frozen Yogurt
- All Things Olive
- Trinity Dental Group
- Cara Shoes
- Klozet Clothing Boutique
- Sherwin Williams Paint Store

I agree with everything you said, except for me, the fries were a bit of a dissapointment.

This is what Plaza 1909 looks like now. I know it is only a strip mall, but as far as strip malls go, this is a very nice one. The quality of the building materials is quite high, and the selection of tenants is much more interesting than you find in most other strip malls in the region. They even went to great trouble to save a mature tree in the middle of the parking lot, and surround it with an island - a classy act if I must say.

Finally, the sign in the window of Mai Asian Restaurant states that it will be opening this Sunday.

Sign at the Magnetic Hill Zoo advertising the new big cats exhibit to be built shortly. It will feature Amur Tigers and Amur Leopards as part of an Asian habitat. You can get a hint of what it will look like in the end. As previously reported, the project will cost $1.4M and has been designed by a "world class" zoo architect.

Also, the Andean Condors arrive from the Calgary Zoo tonight.....

Kurt's Sausage/Meats

Forgive me if this has already been posted...

It appears Kurt's Meats/Sausages will be opening a new retail spot at 1576 Mountain Road in Moncton North. This is VERY exciting. I was driving by yesterday and noticed the sign. Also found their facebook page recently created on Sept 4th. So it appears it is the "Kurt's" we hoped for. You may recall them having a spot on St. George years ago.

In case you are unfamiliar with this area I've attached a few pics.

Cheers,

The Exterior signage has gone up for Mary Brown's Fried Chicken in Plaza 1909.

Is it just a coincidence that this happened the same day as a new direct flight has been announced between Moncton and St. John's?

The not inconsiderable Newfoundland expatriate community in Moncton must be very pleased........

Sorry I didn't take a pic but East Side Mario's has begun renovations. Not sure if they are expanding or not but where the patio used to be is now just fencing.

I agree it's a nice selection of businesses, but I hate how noisy it is inside Big League and Pita Pit. The sound bounces around in there like the inside of the Colesium!

Cloning hardly describes it. I'm an avid Five Guys fan and was shocked and how LIFTED the Five Guys image was and used at Big League.

The tiled walls and checkered borders are the same (even if they chose to add blue tiles at BL). The kitchen layout is virtually identical. The menu board is a veritable carbon copy. Even the items are named the same - no effort to change "little burger" to "small" or even use "single" and "double" burgers instead. Heck, even the stacking of potatoes in the store front. ALL are lifted from the Five Guys trade dress image.

Order counter:

Potatoes: (c'mon, WHO besides Five Guys stacks their potatoes in the store front?)

It appears the only 'original' idea that was their own was the wings and the 'sports' theme. But as these are the same owners of "Sport Rock" in Dieppe, that's hardly a stretch.

I'm guessing the only reason open shelled peanuts are not being served at BL is to prevent an outcry from people with peanut allergies.

Until recently, I've never heard of Five Guys. I haven't been to the USA in over 20 years and I have no plans on going south of the border anytime soon.

I've gone to Big League's twice so far and I like it. Seeing that it's a CC of Five Guys doesn't bother me at all. I don't go to BL for the decor, I go for the quality of the burger and nothing else.

Not sure why, but the Klozet Clothing Boutique exterior sign was up and now it has been taken down...
