What a great idea!! The zoo is popular anyway, but the thought of being able to test out a Segway during your visit might boost numbers even more. Sounds like a win-win situation to me!
I would prefer if they set times aside for tours. I would hate to see those things zipping around the zoo and getting in peoples way or hit a child that know no better. Beside the cost is $29 plus tax. Kind of steep!!

I was under the impression that the Segways were being used for guided tours only. Perhaps I'm wrong. The cost of the rental is not surprising as far as I'm concerned.

Also - The Giant Anteaters and the Hyacinthe Macaws have arrived from the Calgary Zoo.

Apparently there are also negotiations going on with Calgary to inherit their Andean Condors and Vietnamese Pot Bellied Pigs as well..

Auction Site

I noticed that there is a sign up outside the Auction site by Jean Coutu on Mountain Road saying they moved. Any idea what they are doing with the land?

They moved their business to the Berry Mills Road near Homestead Road. Their new location is actually much better suited for their type of business.

I don't think there is anything actually planned for their old property but if you combined this lot with the land for sale immediately adjacent to them on the east, it could support a very large retail/commercial project. It would easily be the largest parcel of prime land available for development on Mountain Road.

1909 Mountain Rd Updates!

- Mary Brown's Fried Chicken (open date moved to Mid-September)
- Mai Asian Restaurant (Open date closer to the end of September)
- Big League Burgers & Wings (opening within the week. Staff were being trained on the menu last night and everything is in place )

Big League looks interesting with the bleacher seating section. Unique!

At least urban sprawl is becoming a little bit more dense.

Group concerned over potential shift from recreation centre in Northwest end

Group spokesperson Jeff Reath says he’s ‘disappointed’ to hear the conversation shifting away from a cause they’ve been working on for close to a decade.

Discussion about the old Moncton High School being re-purposed into a recreational hub isn’t sitting well with a group of citizens hoping to bring a community recreation centre to the northwest part of the city.

Conceptual drawing of the proposed recreational centre at Evergreen Park

Group spokesperson Jeff Reath says he’s ‘disappointed’ to hear the conversation shifting away from a cause they’ve been working on for close to a decade.

Reath points out the east end already has sufficient recreational infrastructure while the northwest doesn’t have anything.

“There’s literally six to ten different things in Moncton East, all within walking distance of the same catchment area that would be utilizing Moncton High School.”

Reath is emphasizing he just wants what’s fair for those living in his part of the city and he doesn’t want the discussion to turn into an ‘us versus them’ battle.

Firm decisions on any of the projects have not been made yet.

personal note - Councillor Shawn Crossman suggested a pool as part of the redevelopment of the old Moncton High site in response to the controversy of the city planning to close the outdoor swimming pool in the east end of the city.

His forward thinking is commendable, but he has opened a can of worms with this proposal. The citizens of northwest Moncton are without significant recreational facilities and have been working on this file for a long time with the civic administration. The current proposal, slated for behind Evergreen Park School is a quite exciting one. Negotiations are still ongoing over what should be included as the major feature for this centre, with the prime possibilities being an indoor tennis centre, a hockey rink and an indoor swimming pool. The citizens committee favours a pool while the city seems to prefer the idea of an indoor tennis facility (presumably because maintenance and operations costs of a tennis facility would be much less than the alternatives).

The future of a northwest recreation facility however now appears to be at risk, partly because the city will need to repurpose the coliseum if a downtown events centre gets built, and also now because of a concern over loss of a major recreational facility in the downtown east end.

There are many things about this situation that could cause considerable discussion and controversy. What does equity really mean? Northwest Moncton is middle to upper middle class while the east end is dominated by lower income families. What are the optics of building a new recreation centre at Evergreen Park while poor children in the east end are left with diminishing recreational options? Is this fair? What about the fact that the residents of the northwest end contribute disproportionately to the city's tax base? Does this count for anything? What about the repurposing of the coliseum? Does this take precedence over either other project? Lots to discuss here.

In the end, the city has to be careful not to bite off more that it can chew. The main priority for the city must remain the downtown events centre. Everything else is secondary. There might not be much money left over for any other worthwhile project in the city. The northwest recreational centre could be pared down. I am personally not convinced about the need for a pool in our neighbourhood. The tennis complex might be sufficient. As for MHS, a recreational centre might be a good idea as part of the repurposing, but other options should be explored, especially as part of a public private partnership. The coliseum will live on as a trade show venue, and I imagine the ice surface will remain as well. In terms of repurposing, I believe they are mostly talking about the upper bowl area and the area where the concessions currently are. I am not sure a pool would work in this space. Perhaps other options would be cheaper......

I'm a student. Just graduated from Evergreen Park School in June. I really love the idea for a Community Center near my home actually. The only problem that I can see with this is vandalism. The school is a drug hub at night (dubbed "The Green") and there hasn't been one week that I can remember where our school has gone graffiti free. I can only imagine the students' faces when they see a nice clean slate like this.

This problem isn't a game changer though. I still want this built, I just think that they are gonna need some security patroling at night.

If this is the case, then having a community centre next door, especially if well utilized and well lighted, might actually reduce the problems with drugs and vandalism in the area.

Here's a pic I took this week at Big League. Not the best shot b/c it's a panorama pic.

We really enjoyed the burgers. My husband said the wings were "fair". There's a wing sauce station where you essentially choose your own sauce and shake your wings. The menu is simple which I love. Keep in mind the regular burgers have two patties and the "littles" have one. The fries are delicious and the smallest size fry can easily feed two. My two cents.

If anyone has been to Bangor recently, or has a trip planned, check out Five Guys Burgers near the Walmart. We went there a few months ago and raved about it and Big League is almost identical.

Cheers and happy eating!

So, the reviews for Big League Burgers & Wings seem quite positive so far. I'll have to check it out!

Porchmouse, if you are really saying that Big League is comparable to Five Guys, then that is very high praise indeed, as Five Guys is considered near the apex of the gourmet burger world. Is Big League really that good?

EDIT - I just checked out the Five Guys menu online, and it is virtually identical........

Looks like I just set the bar quite high eh? Happy to hear others have enjoyed Five Guys as well. The main thing missing compared to Five Guys is the huge bags of potatoes stacked in store (to communicate the fresh cut fries), the peanuts at the tables, and the louder and crazier atmosphere, ie. when you walk into Five Guys they yell out something like "2 more". The taste I find very similar.

Enjoy! When you try it let us know what you think.

Yes, they are very identical. I have been to several of The Five Guys restaurant in Chicago and I went to Big League Burgers and Wings last weekend and the burgers were very good. We did not try the wings thou. However, I found Big League Burgers and Wings better than Relish's on Main Street.
