Bow and Buffalo designs look good. The Mask design doesn't look good.

I prefer the bow design... The almost full glass drivers cab looks more modern.

I (unsurprisingly) prefer The Buffalo design

some comments I read online about the new train purchase stated: why didn't council choose a Canadian-Bombardier train instead of Siemens?

If the Siemens trains are ~$500k-1.5M cheaper per train than Bombardier or other alternatives, @ 60 trains that's $30-90M in savings!
and people always bitch about Calgary CC wasting taxypayers money

Those look awesome. I think I prefer the buffalo too, although it may be nice to ride the mask to a hockey game.

I prefer the Buffalo design because I like how the roof is black and gives the illusion that the front windshield extends to the roof. Very sleek and modern.

Here's a video from Siemens with all of the new designs. It also shows the interior options with the interior in blue instead of the red.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but we currently have 190(?), plus 60 = 250.

These will be our first American born trains. Previous rolling stock were built in Germany. Sacramento, where you at!

This ought to satisfy our ridership until we reach about 400 000 daily, no?

I'm pretty sure only the original U2's were built in Germany. The latest SD160NG (aka Series 8) LRVs definitely were at least assembled in Sacremento and I'm pretty sure all the previous SD160's were too.

Fleet numbers are 80 U2's (originally 83), 72 SD160 and 38 SD160NG, so 200 total before this order.

I believe the plan is to replace some of the very old clunkers that are falling apart, so 190 + 60 - some clunkers = ?

I'm not too concerned about the shape of the windshield, but what I do wonder is are there any interior features which other cities might have in their LRTs which we currently don't?

I wonder if it would make sense to have the fourth car of the new 4 car trains be more open, with few or no seats. Make it essentially only for cyclists and standers, iow. Then maybe the city could allow cyclists at any time of the day in that car. You’d need more polls and more straps from the ceiling to hang onto as well. I wonder if this is being done anywhere. It would help to promote cycling, and there seem to be lots of people who don't mind standing for several stops, and without the seats you may not lose much capacity overall. You'd lose some with the bikes but gain some with more standers. Just a thought.

Are those trains still SD160s, or is it a new model? They look very sleek and modern.

EDIT: Just noticed in the article they're referred to as S200s.

Like the Bow, hate the Mask. An all red design would look great.

All the SDs have come from Sacramento.

Those numbers add up to 190.

For those who don't know, I was offered a volunteer role in the RFP process to review the proposals and provide comments and input from a "customer experience" perspective.

The confidentiality agreement I signed was pretty restrictive given the monetary value of the contract, so I can't really say anymore. I can't comment about the ins and outs of the review process, who the proponents are, what the proposals entailed, or anything like that. I didn't even know who the winner was for sure until today other than an educated guess as I wasn't privy to any of that.

Announcement:

Design book, also saw this as part of the RFP process:

http://s3.documentcloud.org/documents/786015/s200-design-book.pdf

-------------------

A few key features you will see on the new LRVs:

- Glass partition wall between the driver's cab and the passenger carriage will make the LRV more permeable and allow passengers to look forward (or back) along the journey.

- All glass passenger doors

- Bench-style seating does away with the grooved bucket seats as seen on the Series 8 LRVs (last order), which were maligned by some

- End doors moved back from the operator's cab allows better passenger flow and helps alleviate some of the door-crowding problems

- Potentially less stanchions (poles) with some more innovative handhold options. Not sure if this will actually happen and may come out after the detailed design phase

- Leaning pads instead of fold-up seats in the priority seating areas and in the articulation bellows (middle of the train where it bends) allows for more capacity as well as an almost-seat when the wheelchair/stroller area is not occupied as well as in the articulation where no such feature was before.

- Digital displays for next stop/destination as well as possible "infotainment" displays that could display things such as: realtime line map with current train location, next stop/destination, date, time, weather, announcements

Were there any special considerations for bikes?

I like the Buffalo design. The transparent parts of the train are more noticeable when white is used less; that screams ultra-modern.
