At one point, it was a k-12 school, but it began bursting at the seems, and about 5 years ago, they purchased an elementary school on Louise for the high school. At that point, there were 40 kids (grades 8-12), but had around 30-40 kids per grade in the elementary, guaranteeing a large number in the future. The government only allocated money for a high school with 40 kids, but with 140-150 kids today and 400ish in the elementary, they're now trying to figure things out (like all other Saskatoon schools). You have to wonder if the government will ever start thinking of the future instead of always building for the present to do patchwork.

Here's the article in the Leader Post: (no wonder it's an "Unknown school division" when it never comes up in the Ministry of Education's stats).

Fransaskois schools. French all day, everyday! French has to be your first language to be a teacher there. I would imagine that it would have to be your first language to go there too. Honestly, that school division bursting doesn't surprise me. We have a lot more people from Quebec and other French speaking countries calling Saskatoon/Saskatchewan home because of our current boom. They probably weren't built to handle any significant raise in student numbers.

I think that the graduate students may have the option of families living with them, like a spouse and potentially a child as well. So the vast majority would be student housing but there could be a few non-students mixed in just due to the type of facility that Graduate House is.

Riversdale Delicatessen

Terrible news about Cafe Sola.
That was a definite gem and added much needed cafe culture to the bare area around the Bus depot and warehouse district. But I guess one closes and another opens...

My friend will be opening Riversdale Delicatessen across from Leyda's.
There are some photos of the reno's on their FB page. Boom 20th boom!

Speaking of Riversdale...

Councillor believes project could revive Riversdale

By Phil Tank, The Starphoenix September 10, 2013

Quote:
A Saskatoon city councillor believes a new development in Riversdale could help transform the city.

An enthusiastic Ward 2 Coun. Pat Lorje said a residential/commercial mixed project planned for the corner of Avenue C South and 19th Street will help eliminate divisions in the city based on perceptions about east side versus west side.

"This really does demonstrate a huge amount of confidence in the Riversdale area," Lorje told city council Monday night after a presentation by Victoria developer Chris Le Fevre.

"We accept the rich and the poor alike in Riversdale."

The development, which was endorsed by council, would include four buildings with 160 apartment units of various size and price near the Farmers Market at River Landing.

Le Fevre said his development, known as "The Banks," is aimed at a crosssection

of the housing market and that he has experience with projects "on the other side of the tracks." Le Fevre pointed out that some of the units are expected to sell for less than $200,000.

"I feel this development is a very intricate jigsaw piece of your puzzle in River Landing," said Le Fevre.

Centre's expansion plan seeks relaxed limits
City sees no negative impact

===================
I hadn't heard of this planned expansion before, but it sounds like Council approved the Preston Crossing expansion last night according to the Mayor on the radio this morning.

The Banks

The Banks website is online: http://www.thebanks.ca

The PDF document on the website notes, in the FAQs, that construction will begin March 2014. It has a good breakdown of the residential and commercial units in each of the 4 buildings planned, too.

There's hoarding up and work going on around the former Squire Shop on 2nd Ave. Anyone have any idea what's going on there?

Banks building a sign of continued renewal in Saskatoon’s Riversdale neighbourhood

By Jacob Morgan, Metro

Chris Le Fevre displays the plan for his Banks building in the Riversdale neighbourhood of Saskatoon.

Quote:
Chris Le Fevre wants his Banks development project to stand out.

The Victoria-based property owner’s plan to erect a four-storey building on 20th Street near the farmers’ market in Riversdale received its final stamp of approval from city council on Monday night.

“I had been in the development approval process for some months and this, I would say, was the perfection of all that work,” said Le Fevre. “We are ready to go.”

With apartment units, townhouses as well as workspaces for artisans and professionals, he said the Banks should be a unique structure that appeals to a wide variety of people.

“They start at just under $200,000 and go up to just under $500,000,” he said. “So it’s not a bunch of high-end products for a select few – it’s a broad parameter.”

This isn’t the first time Le Fevre has tried to spruce up inner-city areas. He has primarily worked in Victoria, but is also in the process of completing 16 townhouses on Avenue D South called the Edge.

“I saw the opportunity for urban renewal down there in Riversdale and that was a compelling attraction to me,” he said.

Since I know nothing about what is going on in Saskatoon, can anyone tell me if there are currently any highrise developments under construction in the city at the moment?

Nope. The closest we have is the River Landing project that is pretty much cursed from breaking ground at this point. I guess there's also the River Centre II project, but that's been downscaled from what it was originally proposed to be in terms of height.

River Landing info can be found here (not much new info to be had on it though):

Grosvenor Park Centre on 8th

Hi everyone ... Have any of you heard of changes happening at Maguire's Pub in the Grosvenor Park Centre on 8th? Their address is #32 - 2105 8th Street East. That is also the address that has been recently added to a list of locations of Trifon's Pizza. I wonder if this will be a similar collaboration to that in Lawson Heights where Trifon's Pizza resides inside of the Manhattan GastroPub?

As a side note, speaking of Grosvenor Park Centre, they will soon offer a new children's art studio. If any of you know of young budding artists or those who might like to try it out, apparently 4Cats Art Studio is "The Best, Most Fun Art Studio EVER!" (Their words) ... They have locations in the US, Canada, Australia, Mexico, and soon Saskatoon. http://www.4cats.com/saskatoon

That's probably the correct scenario, as Maguires and Manhattan have the same prinicipal ownership.

Outdoor dining hits downtown street

By Arielle Zerr, The Starphoenix September 12, 2013

Quote:
Two downtown restaurants are experimenting with parking spot patios, a trend some hope will take off in Saskatoon.

Mediterranno and Spicy Bite, both in the Drinkle Building on Third Avenue, have turned the metered parking spots in front of their businesses into an outdoor dining area.

"Parklets," as they're often called, are gaining popularity in North America because they turn everyday parking spaces into patios that can be taken down in the winter to be used for parking and snow removal.

Many major cities, including Toronto, Boston and San Francisco, already have regulations governing the spaces.

Dave Denny, owner of the Drinkle building, came home from a trip to Europe inspired by outdoor patios there.

He thought they'd be perfect for downtown Saskatoon, and was happy to hear that the city was looking at parklets as part of its City Centre Plan, the much anticipated study that will chart a path for downtown growth.

Permission for the parklet came soon after Denny applied to the city.

On Wednesday, the patio space was gearing up for a lunch hour rush. Surrounded by a short fence and two concrete barriers for protection from the street, it was filled with tables, an umbrella, flowers and people.

"It makes the city a little bit more vibrant I believe, and it attracts people to the downtown area and out of their offices for lunch," said Colin De Jong, who ate lunch with friends in the parklet outside Mediterranno. De Jong said he had some initial safety concerns about being on the street, but that didn't hold him back from eating there.

"I think people crave being around more people in the urban environment, and when you provide that, you differentiate yourself from the suburban malls and strip malls," Denny said.

He decided to try the parklet in connection with Parking Day and last weekend's Better Bloc Party. It will be open until Sept. 21.

Bahaha! When I saw this pic first, that didn't even cross my mind. Now, it's one of those things that can't be unseen.
