Also how in the world did Colorado Springs have a democrat in the first place? Was it really West COS and Manitou that elected him?

Mail ballots were allowed, although I do not know whether this could have been operated as an all mail ballot election. Probably not, special elections have different rules, and they wouldn't have had the time to do the mail ballot procedures. In any case, I'd have to do more digging regarding when the petitions were submitted because we just had a major overhaul to the elections law. So it might've come in under the old rules or the new. But either way, I know my brother voted by mail because he was in Chicago yesterday. So it was possible.
Yes, he was the Manitou/west side/downtown guy. District also included central and east/southeast Colorado Springs. Demographically, not unlike Arapahoe County/Aurora probably. Not a slam dunk Republican seat by any means (he was the Senate President, after all).

—, obviously. I think the legislation they passed was stupid, pointless, and invasive too. If I were voting down there, I would've voted against the recall, but only because I think recalls are the wrong answer and elections have consequences. If I wasn't voting on that principle, though - if I was actually voting based on their policy views - I'd have voted them out too. Democrats have seriously overreached this session, and wasted their political capital on some truly meaningless measures (15 round magazines? Really?). They feel invincible - half of Denver doesn't even believe that a Republican could get elected in Colorado because they haven't been here long enough to remember anything but blue. Well, guess what, the reckoning is coming.
I also do think Hick is vulnerable if the GOP can find one candidate, anybody, who isn't downright terrifying.
EDIT: Frankly, I want the Republicans back in control of at least one chamber. The elections bill that the Dems rammed through is an absolute nightmare. It has to be the most shoddy piece of legislation ever written, and working with it this election cycle is costing me hundreds of hours that would be better spent on more productive endeavors. It's about as coherent as many of our forum discussions - the overarching principle is right, but that's about as far as it goes.
