Not to be nitpicky, but this simply is no longer true.

Edmonton's feels larger, because the crowd is only spread over 7 blocks down 102nd, not 11 blocks like Calgary. I also think everyone just assumes it is because it was for so long. Pride here in Calgary had to work very hard over the past 5 years to clean up its image from before. In fact, this current organization has only existed for 5 years, as the previous version of Pride never even registered as a society of the province. It was a mess, but the turn around has been amazing!! Attendance numbers in the links below:

You have anything to back that up? I find it hard to believe.

I chatted with a guy as we were walking down Stephen at the end of the parade who's from Burnaby. Said Vancouver's was bigger (duh) but he found Calgary's friendlier. Also said that he'd been to San Diego and Calgary's was bigger.

Do you not read the responses before you post? I was proven wrong and had agreed literally the post before where you challenged what I had already changed my mind about.

That's not relevant. You stated that Edmonton's was bigger as if it were fact. I also disagree completely about what Surrealplaces said about Edmonton ever having a pride 3x the size of Calgary's. I've read descriptions of both celebrations pretty much since I've lived in Alberta and never saw them depicted as anything but about the same size- which was pitifully tiny at my first Calgary pride in 2001 and which is pretty damn impressive today.

I had heard that the Calgary parade was a bit bigger so that makes sense. Either way, both parades have come a long way.

Oh god, the Battle of Alberta extends to pride parades. Whatever. Our gays have a larger selection of tank tops and nicer eyebrows.

You brought it up again after it was already over. The guy provided evidence and I changed my mind before you even read my post apparently. Relax.

There is no fight, merely pointless nonsense.

I like Chadillac's avatar! My boyfriend very similar pink shorts that he has been wearing for the past five years.

In my opinion, San Diego's pride seemed bigger than Calgary because when I was there there were 4 story high inflatable men in tuxedo's kissing, those crazy antigay church group that flies an American flag upside down and the navy/military has just started participating in pride AND being allowed to wear military uniforms now.

I had heard that Shell energy had a group that marched in the pride parade, but I'm disappointed that many energy companies still don't sponsor pride or get involved.

Does it really matter that Edmonton's is "bigger"? I don't think so. It's about celebrating our diversity. As a Province we've made a lot of progress. That's what counts, not who got there first.

That's true, and I don't think it matters. All I did was point out a few stats showing that they're actually very similar sized. I was on the Pride board here for 4 years, and we worked very well with our friends in Edmonton. I celebrate their successes as much as I celebrate ours, and wish them nothing but the best.

As a Calgarian I have nothing against Edmonton but I think it matters somewhat in the sense that it helps the rest of Alberta, and maybe Canada, realize that Calgary is no longer as conservative as people thought we were, and that we can be just as progressive as "Redmonton"
