I wonder why someone edited EIA on Wiki to show Icelandair flight as "seasonal". The ref. code link to the Icelandair does not state it is seasonal. I do understand their schedule stops Jan 2015 - that does not mean flights do. Anyone know how to find out who posted that and also how to edit Wiki?

It will be interesting to see if the connection times are an issue. The last couple of comments about KEF have been quite negative on this website http://www.airlinequality.com/Airports/Airport_forum/kef.htm

Another interesting note is that there is only a one hour turnaround time at YEG. That seems quite short for an international flight. On top of that, if the KEF-YEG flight is late, so will the YEG-KEF flight and the connection window at KEF will be all but gone. As others have said, i hope the arrival/departure times change because a sour taste in the mouth of a traveller can form quickly once a connection is missed and you find out that it is the airline that gave you and endorsed that connection time.

On a side note, i did send out an Edmonton office e-mail within the medium sized (150 people) company i work for and i did get some positive feedback already. I was surprised at how many people have visited or know people that have visited Iceland already. Hopefully we can all do our little part to support this route.

I really hope the City of Edmonton does somehow help promote this route either through TV commercials or billboards at Oiler games for example. These kinds of things are done all over Europe with Ryanair and it is money well spent relative to the silver balls on the Whitemud.

I have seen Icelandair ads on the TTC subway in Toronto and on the Metro rail in DC.

So I think we should see some ads soon here.

See, the nice thing about wikipedia is that you can go in and fix it yourself - you don't have to wait for someone else to do it. But cite your sources or else the wiki Nazis will remove your edits.

1 hour turn around for a plane that size should be fine. Would you even need the honey wagon after a flight of that length? The time saved might be worth the weight.

Honey wagon!

Yeah you can probably turn a 57 pretty quick if you are all ready to rock.

While it makes for interesting conversation on this thread lets not get too excited about the turnaround times.

I am sure FI looked at all the scenarios based on past experiences.

Give them a little credit for knowing what they are doing.

The 57 is a pretty easy turn around machine. I'm not sure if Icelandair uses a bulk load (loose bags) system or container loaded system? In the latter case load times are drastically reduced. As the bag room employees are usually loading these far in advance of the aircraft even being on the ground. With the cut off times in place by the time the airplane arrives the containers are generally ready to go and once the aircraft is emptied they can pretty much load the containers in a fairly quick fashion.

There is no option to container load a pax 757. The only ULD options for the 757 are maindeck Demi/IATA-AYY used by UPS, Fedex and others in the Cargo market.

The 57 was designed for the North American domestic market, so 1 hour turnarounds are very easy, Should be able to push a 35 minute turnaround with an efficient ground crew and cleaners. Double crew a 747 and it can turn in 45 minutes provided its not a Combi with lots of unusual cargo on the maindeck.

The ground crews in Iceland sound like pit crews at the Indy 500.

Would be interesting to watch how they handle the turnarounds.

Weird stuff happens all the time in airline business. Just to get through the day millions of assumptions are required to get decisions moved forward. Great people with lots of experience doing their best still make errors in judgment that have dramatic consequences on the front line staff.

Example: In the post openskies heyday AC was launching 3-7 new stations per month. AC was hours away from announcing YYZ-DEN and YVR-DEN service when I noticed the turnaround time was only 20 minutes in DEN. Quick call to network scheduling determined that based upon past experience the DEN station could handle 20 minute turn no problem. I pushed back again and commented the new airport could not handle 20 minute turns. Computer system had calibrated turnaround times based upon Stapleton and did not have any information on new DIA.

Another example: New international terminal is about to open at YVR (this is early to mid 90s IIRC). All the information recieved to both AC and CP management listed ability for the airport to handle 5 swing gates (sweing gates allow for efficient aircraft turnarounds when the flight arrives from international location and then is required for a domestic or transborder mission). Each airline coordinated gate assignments and flight schedules to allow for 5 aircraft arrive international and depart domestic or vice versa. Airport authority hosts a look see information session right before openning day of ITB. Standing at gates 50-51-52 with networtk scheduling and Airport reps, someone asks where the other 2 swing gates are located. Answer back from the airport is the other gates are 60 and 62 and only swing between international and transborder. Back to the drawing board as between CP and AC the plan was to swing inbound NRT(CP), HKG(CP), NGO(CP), and KIX (AC) onto YYZ.

Just an update: I received a very nice response to the email I sent. Neither EIA or FL are asleep at the switch...and I will leave it at that. I look forward to my travels on FL to Europe and Iceland 😀

Should be another route announcement in about 2 months for another spring start.

Think south...

I just confirmed it with someone who definitely has knowledge of it (airlines route planner).

I was just thinking about which airline and City could give us a connection to all of these places "South" (outside the USA)

Belize City, Bogotá, Buenos Aires–Ezeiza, Cancún, Caracas, Cozumel, Guadalajara, Guatemala City, Liberia (CR), Lima, Mexico City, Monterrey, Montego Bay, Panama City, Puerto Vallarta, Rio de Janeiro-Galeao, Roatan, San José de Costa Rica, San José del Cabo, San Salvador, Santiago de Chile, São Paulo-Guarulhos, Aguascalientes, Chihuahua, Guadalajara, Hermosillo, León/Del Bajío, Mazatlán, Morelia, Puebla, Queretaro, San Luis Potosí, Torreón/Gómez Palacio, Veracruz, Zacatecas and seasonal to Ixtapa/Zihuatanejo, Nassau, Providenciales.

Hmmm...

Should be DFW then. What else?

If it does turn out to be Volaris or InterJet, then they will miss the busy season.

The only hub-like in Central America is Panama City (brand new hub), but I don't think Copa has the right equipment and I highly doubt YEG can generate enough traffic.

DFW..here we come!!!

If it's not a transborder flight to DFW, then I would put my bet on Volaris.

tuffyy the question i have for you is will there be a route announcement in about 2 months for another spring start for YYC. Depending on that answer, we can probably guess whether it will be a US or international flight. Yes yes US is technically international.
