Regardless though, me thinks there are exciting times ahead for Edmonton, in general, and skyline wise (even without a 800' Money Mart).

Doesn't matter. They are mere extensions of the central city. They would not exist as they currently are, which includes their new high-rise proposals. If Brampton were nowhere near Toronto, and its own city, functioning independent of any other, it would be more akin to Cornwall or Welland. Just like St. Albert would likely still be a small Prairie town if it wasn't next to Edmonton. You can't look at these mere suburbs as their own independent cities, you have to look at them within the regional context, otherwise it isn't a fair comparison.

Yup, the next 5 years is going to transform our skyline and downtown.

Illimanada(s), Serenity, the one on 111st (don't know the name) were all in the past five years no? i guess not any major skyline changers but they've done a lot for Jasper; especially the stuff by Pearl. With Pearl and Our Parents Home coming also, that area is going to be quite dense.

Oh and what the heck is the one recently built called that is like half a block south of Jasper by Illuminada? I personally think is by far the nicest recently built, but it is like an unsung hero.

it might not look different from afar....but you are incredibly foolish if you think there hasn't been a massive transformation on street level in the downtown area. it would be pretty neat to have a condensed video of pedestrian traffic in various areas circa a firday night in 2008 and compare it to one now.

I think it also gave a lot of people a chance to sit back and realize the opportunities they missed in Edmonton during the last boom.

That I agree with. Street level, downtown is night and day compared to even 5 years ago. The streets are busier, the businesses are more plentiful and varied, the panhandling is more subdued, and yes, more lots have been filled in.

I'm a strong advocate for putting the street before the skyline, and Edmonton has done great in that regard. That being said, it can't hurt that, in addition to these massive improvements at street level, we can't also have some refresh to the skyline. Vancouver, Calgary, Toronto, and soon Montreal have managed both.

Keep in mind that is that I was just playing devil's advocate. While I don't know if the city will have such a dramatic transformation as some are wishfully thinking here, I do think that Edmonton's progress c. 2013-2018 will be leaps and bounds above the progress made c. 2008-2013. The new arena pretty much guarantees that, even if the towers aren't fully built out by then.
