Very different factors, variables in play to some degree. Mind you both have some very impressive developments.... But it doesn't hurt to have a region of 6 and almost 3 impacting you.

Cities like Burnaby, Markham, or Mississauga are more extensions of the central city (Vancouver, Toronto) than their own cities. Much like Sherwood Park is pretty much Edmonton despite being technically separate. You can't look at Mississauga's developments as if Mississauga was its own independent, main city of its own region; you have to look at it within the regional context (Toronto). Brampton getting some sleek new high rise is more akin to Mill Woods getting one than say Sherbrooke or Saskatoon. In the cases of Etobicoke or North York, they actually are apart of the main city (City of Toronto) and are no longer independent cities.

But the fact of the matter is that...Burnaby, Markham, and Mississauga like you alluded to are their own cities.

Every single project mentioned here is within the continuous urban form of Greater Toronto.

I would love to see a super tall in Edmonton. But then again, I would much sooner love to drive through a warehouse district packed with 20 storey towers where my view of the next block would be completely obstructed.

Visually, it is a question of whether you'd like to be gazing at something iconic from the outskirts of town; or be going through a downtown that you enjoy for longer than three blocks and you're back out of it.

Seems to be the eternal debate. A huge tower does a lot for civic pride and gets people talking. A bunch of smaller tower does more for street life etc.

Solution. Just one beautiful super tall that everyone identifies with (that doesn't look too out of place) and a whole bunch of much smaller towers.

Ultima and Encore will have a huge impact on the west skyline; more than I think some of us realize. To have 2 shiny glassy, tall and slim condos dead center in the central district is something we would have all fainted about 10 years ago.

With the new rink being built, expect 2 or 3 more of that size.

Oh yeah, Fox towers too. I suppose....

According to CBRE, Industrial absorption is 1.1mil sqft thus far in 2013... with another 1.3 million coming on stream or u/c.

Retail is up 6.6%

$165mil in multi-unit investment thus far, per doors up $6000 to $136k.

Lots of talk about the arena impact over the next 3 years with many developers/investors positioning themselves to be first in.

I just mean for residential buildings, not commercial or even mixed use (Telus Sky will be about 720' I think). I have very serious doubts that Edmonton will have a building taller than anything in Calgary (810' when Brookfield place is done), at least in my lifetime. You never know though...
