Just took a walk around the west end of DT. I didn’t take any pictures but here is a descriptive update of the projects haha. Maybe we can convince Signal to do a photo tour of all of the constructions sites around the city.

- They have poured concrete on the convention center expansion.
- The Steele hotel is moving along pretty quickly. I really wish we could see a render for this one though.
- The large underground parking garage to the side of Fortis Place is on its second floor now. The parking garage is bigger than I realized. Does anyone remember reading how many spaces it will have in total? Will it be two floors or are there more to come?
- Windows have been installed in the new restaurants next to the Keg.
- Site of new condos on Lemarchant looks completely prepped and ready to begin construction.

Oh and of course…. progress continues to be outrageously slow on the Henry-Bell project. You really only need to check in on that one every few months.

I found this really interesting table on the Stats Canada website. It shows the breakdown of housing types for all of the CMAs in Canada. The only unfortunate thing about the table is that a lot of housing types are grouped in the category of “other”. This category includes duplexes, townhouses, apartments under 5 stories and all other attached housing.

Interestingly – St John’s has the fewest number of people living in apartment buildings 5 or more stories of every single CMA in the country. (Not only lowest percentage, but fewest people in absolute terms as well).

However, we also seem to have a very high proportion of our population living in the “other” category. This is of course due to the row houses. The only other region with a similar proportion in “other” are the CMAs in Quebec. This is also due to their low-rise, dense, often older neighborhoods. (I only eyeballed the percentages, but I’m pretty sure only the Quebec CMAs were in our range)

Anyways, I found this table interesting and figured I’d share. I wasn’t sure what thread to put it in though. It’s obviously not related to a specific project. But I wouldn’t consider it off topic either.

New redenders up on the board at the front of the Statoil building on Water St/ Harbour Drive! The glare from outside and the filthy window don't make it easy to see the plans, so you might have to view this a little closer or up the photos contrast to see detail. Overall it seems like they'll deck out the front of the building with a glass facade. Nothing special but a nice facelift!
