Wow, you never know which posts are going to take off in terms of responses (but if there is a hint of city to city comparisons, that is usually a good sign).

To change topic, according to the Retail Insider website, the Yankee Candle Company is apparently planning on an expansion into the Canadian marketplace and will open over 50 stores in Canada over the next five years. Given this degree of penetration into the marketplace, it would be reasonable to expect at least several Maritime locations, including Moncton......

They could go to either Champlain Place or the Mapleton Centre.......

My money would be on Champlain, they are a staple in US malls, but not in big box developments, so I doubt it would end up at Mapleton.
I don't see the province of Quebec getting any Yankee Candle stores, that market is usually the last for American companies expanding into Canada...

HBC-Lord & Taylor has bought Saks Fifth Avenue for 2.9B US$, I don't think we should ever expect a full-line Saks here, but it should indicate that Hudson's Bay is relatively healthy and could return to Moncton in the future or open one of the discount-outlet banner (Saks Off 5th).

Hudson's Bay Co. says it will open up to seven full-line Saks stores in Canada and about two dozen locations under a discount banner (Saks Off 5th) once it completes a US$2.9-billion friendly deal to acquire the U.S. luxury retailer.

The retail landscape is certainly shifting rapidly in Canada these days.......

I would be very surprised to see Saks Off 5th or Nordstrom Rack here in Moncton (I could be wrong though). It would be nice to see The Bay return (perhaps downtown as part of the Events Centre or even the new Hudson's Bay Factory Store or Home Outfitters out at the Mapleton Centre.

What would be exciting (and would be a game changer) is if one of the new Canadian Tanger Factory Outlet Malls sets up here in Moncton. Tanger is planning on opening up to 15 factory outlet malls in Canada in the next seven years. Surely at least one (perhaps two) of these would be in Atlantic Canada. If Tanger came here, you might actually see some very interesting stores in their development, like Saks Off 5th.

This statement comes from the Tanger Factory Outlets annual report:

Our developments encompass a diverse tenant base comprised of approximately 400 different well-known, upscale, national designer or brand name concepts, such as Ann Taylor, Banana Republic, Brooks Brothers, Calvin Klein, Coach Leatherware, Eddie Bauer, GAP, J. Crew, Juicy, Kate Spade, Lucky Brand Jeans, Michael Kors, Nike, Old Navy, Polo Ralph Lauren, Saks Fifth Avenue - Off Fifth, Tommy Hilfiger, Under Armour and others.

So, Tanger already has a corporate relationship with Saks Off 5th......

The next 5-10 years could be very interesting......

Probable Tanger outlets:

1. Toronto (opening this week)
2. Vancouver
3. Calgary
4. Edmonton
5. Ottawa
6. Montreal
7. Winnipeg
8. Halifax
9. Hamilton
10. Quebec City
11. Victoria
12. Saskatoon and/or Regina
13. St. Catherine's/ Niagara
14. St. John's and/or Moncton
15. London/Kitchener/Waterloo/ Second Toronto location

I could see Off Fifth opening at all of the Tanger outlets and the remaining locations being second/third locations in the largest cities (Toronto, Vancouver, Calgary, etc.)

Looking at Tagner outlets website they already have three centers in Canada and here they are:

-Bromont (QC)
-Cookstown (ON)
-Saint Sauveur (QC)

If I would be the city of Moncton I would go after them to get them to setup where the Future Inn is on Mapleton and make a good center. Tagner has a few great connections with well known brands and companies through the world.

I personally went to the Tagner Outlets in Myrtle Beach and their offering was awesome. IF i had the guts ansd the capital I would approach them to set up in town and IF they would set up where i mentionned it would be close to the TCH and would tie in with the Future location of the new Costco if it materializes,

If Tanger Factory Outlets were ever to come to Moncton (and that's a big if), I would suggest that they consider the land on the south side of the TCH across from the Caledonia Industrial Park and immediately adjacent to Harrisville Blvd on the west. The city currently uses this land for a snow dump in the wintertime.

This land is already zoned for highway commercial use and is separated from nearby residential areas by the CNR mainline. It has tremendous visibility from the TCH and is not far from the Highway 15 interchange. Access to the property would be via the Harrisville Blvd interchange. This land is level and would be very easy to develop. It's crying out for a large scale commercial development like this.

Potentially by the airport if a interchange was build there but it's not already zoned for comercial so could be difficult. What about the Bridgedale bvld area? Is that a possibility?

(1) - On the north side of Highway 15 off of Harrisville Blvd would definitely be a possibility. The city has already approved a new road out that way for highway commercial development.

(2) - Bridgedale Blvd is a non starter. It's on the wrong side of the river. The tourists would never find it.......

I think that off Harrisville with the car dealerships, Kent, Sobeys, Mariot and Airport, could become a hot destination. I'd love so see a development include stores new to Moncton or the region. Best Buy, The Brick, Victorias Secret, Jack Astors, Milestones, Kelsey's ect. with more hotels and the like. That's all I could think of for stores not in the area. Anyone else have anything?

MAC cosmetics

MAC Cosmetics is set to open at Champlain in fall 2013. They are advertising for positions on Career Beacon. This is big news for users of this brand as they have been promising to open a store in Moncton for years .

Thanks for the info. I wonder if MAC Cosmetics will open in the combined Laura Secord, Bizou and Fruits & Passion space across from the new Fossil store....

The new Terra Verde location on St-George blvd is coming along nicely. They're definitely putting a lot of money into these renovations, including 3 brand new roof top air conditioning systems. I'm guessing they must have bought the place, seeing that there's an Office Space for Lease sign. Former tenants all gone.

This should brighten up St-George blvd once completed.

I have no doubt that Terra Verde is successful and that they need premises with greater display space in order to grow. I wish them well. It's just unfortunate that they will be leaving the downtown core.

The speculation is that a restaurant may take over their existing space next to Mexicali Rosa's. While that would be welcome, there is currently too much of a concentration downtown on clubs, restaurants and coffee houses and not enough on retail. A better balance would be nice......

They boxed up the old peoples location today, the permit indicates its the MAC cosmetics, that solves the questions on that unit.......

Good stuff. The odd triangular shape of that unit would have made it difficult to lease. I'm glad to see it occupied. The other empty units at Champlain Place are more traditionally shaped. I imagine there are plans for them already.

The only rumoured store for Champlain which has not yet made it's appearance is l'Occitane en Provence. I wonder what's going on there?
