Looks like we are taking a bit of a longer route home...

This mornings IAH flight was oversold... Good for YEG, bad for me.

We are now going through DEN and IAH later today... On the plus side its the mainline flight to DEN.

Got to catch up with a former co-worker from EIA this morning, and indeed YEG is expecting a couple of announcements over the next few month's by airlines not currently serving the airport (both discussed in past posts). Also alot of talk about a airline I never expected to see in YEG being optmistic about a route in 2014 that would also tie into YYC on the same journey on a seasonal trial basis. Looks like some good moves coming up in the near future. And yes, the North Terminal is expecting a very heavy facelift that should be announced soon.

^^ If it ties to YYC on the same journey, then it has to be a long haul flight. So, it could be IcelandAir.

AA coming to YEG is not a huge surprise since they are merging with US Airways.

I don't see Icelandair sharing that particular route as YEG should easily fill a 757... I think Tuffy is suggesting another airline is considering using YEG/YYC pairing an airline we are not considering here in YEG.

The only renos I know about are mechanical upgrades that have been put off a number of times now do to budget issues. No one I know involved knows about any major work Yet. I will check with a couple of people in Van who do most of the airport work.

One transborder, one international and one potential international seasonal shared with YYC. I've been asked to not to pre-announce it everywhere. But I think we can easily guess the first two.

AA for transborder (this seems highly likely)
Icelandair for YEG
and then either Korean Air or Asiana to ICN as the shared route.

These are my best guesses. Exciting times for both cities.

Was not the shared route something that was huge in the 80s and 90s when a number of European flights were through Edmonton and then on to Vancouver?

Is it possible if this "trial" works we will see more shared routes?

Mexico City on one of the Mexican airlines could also be a possibility for the shared route. Although I would much rather we got an asian airline.

I assume the first two you mention are nonstop flights?

Well we made it to IAH, but not making it to CUN tonight...

Flight from YEG-DEN on the 320 was pretty much full. We then flew on a 753 from DEN-IAH and that is one long airplane! We found out that if we would have been put on a earlier flight to DEN we likely would have been on a 787 to IAH!!!

The first two flights mentioned would be nonstop in both directions for YEG, the second "shared" flight would be one stop in one direction from what I understood. The "shared" flight would also be a widebody flight with a aircraft requiring some decent range. Just wait for the announcement, I feel cruel even saying anything...

That makes total sense. A new airport is not needed at Tulum. What is needed is a better road along the coast between Cancun and Tulum. One that allows travel at highway speeds and doesn't have to slow down every few minutes to go through a town. That is what really slows the trip down.

Won't happen (other than maybe the rebranding of the PHX flight). AA won't come to YEG but I would put a high probability of WestJet adding DFW and maybe ORD due to their codeshare. As a matter of fact I would not be surprised to see the new AA drop PHX as well and WestJet could pick up the slack.
