Why can't it be both a very wide large floor plate and tall?

I was looking through some Qatar pics, and I cannot believe how rapidly that country (with its capital, Doha) develops. how do they do it? is it the oil? and then you have places like Vancouver, and while we're developing pretty good, certainly not at the pace that Doha is changing, and developing. wow.

Because there would be no light reaching the street, for one.

Because it would be an ugly light-blocking monolith.

tall buildings aren't only for density, they give a sense of a city's progression because it's always easier to build sideways than upwards. i'm not too sure how to explain it. being that it will be right beside both skytrain lines, i feel that it will be wasteful not to take advantage of this visual appeal

Tall doesn't necessarily equal dense, and The Drive is pretty great how it is already.
Agreed. The nieghborhood "works". Why try and drastically change it?

Also, can the area really take that many more people so quickly? Can the surrounding facilities/amenities accommodate so many more people? The skytrain is already very busy there - especially at rush hour.

They should extend the skytrain along Broadway and then propose the same density at Broadway and Blenheim.

I guess my argument is that I don't think height here would be visually appealing in this neighbourhood. I'd rather see really sharp midrise buildings with their own character, maybe something with a kind of industrial/railroady feel? I'm just not sure Commercial should be made into downtown junior just because there is a big skytrain station there. Density for sure, but maybe not height.

Remember that point towers were conceived to allow light to penetrate down to the street. An 8 storey street wall could cast a street in permanent shadow (depending on N-S or E-W orientation.

nice new DEVELOPMENT PERMIT signs seem to be out and about.

I have to say .... MAJOR improvement with the render added and splashes of color.

The Cambie Cafe at 7th/Cambie has been closed for at least 2 weeks (though the restaurant signage remains in place). There is a commercial sign on the building indicating that a 'brand new freestanding retail space' is available. However, if the building was demolished for new retail, wouldn't the rental apartments (part of the same building but facing 7th) need to be replaced as per city bylaw..?

in that render it looks as if the commercial space is being totally rebuilt ... with the rental residential component untouched behind ....

Well they're making 3600 sq feet of commercial space on the ground floor which seems to take up everything back to the alley.

The Cambie Cafe is a component of the rental building (there are a few apartments above it). I guess I am wondering how a partial demolition could be achieved that would allow for new retail while leaving the rest of the rental building intact?

I personally think the site could support additional density given its location between two Canada Line stations...

Additional elevations and floor plans (http://www.loopnet.com/Attachments/2/2/5/225C18F6-BC97-4BBC-8855-265F86189F06.pdf ) seem to indicate that the entire apartment building *will be demolished*...

ya looking at it again and for it to offering parking and loading space it has to be the whole building.
