The TCH-1 east of PMB needs to have the speed limit increased to 110km/h after the Gateway Project is completed in its entirety. I was driving along the 8 lane stretch there westbound and it is totally safe to drive at 110-130 and a lot of us are driving at that speed anyway after the freeway opened up from 200 St. The same for the TCH-1 on the Burnaby/Coquitlam side needs to have its speed limit increased to 100km/h.

Totally agreed. It'll be a seamless CRUCIAL link between Richmond/YVR to TCH-1, Fraser Valley and Pitt Meadows/Maple Ridge. Finally there'll be a limited access link between BC-99/91 and TCH-1. I will finally be able to avoid the dreaded roads in New West and not having to pay any tolls when I access the TCH-1 from Surrey eastwards (by avoiding PMB).

My commute from here in Richmond to Surrey Central/points east of PMB should be cut by around 20min (very significant) when I use Hwy 17.

Couldn't agree more and those are indeed the speeds that many already drive in reality. The new highway has so much capacity that there is no need to be cutting back on the speeds. Make the traffic flow, for God's sake.

What really needs to happen is an education campaign on these multi lane highways. Who wants to go in on a 40' long banner to drape on overpasses with:

Code:
 PASSING GENERAL TRAFFIC SLOW/TRUCK
NO TRUCKS
I don't generally drive more than 105 when I'm not in a rush in order to save fuel, but sometimes I am in a rush and need that left lane to be wide open.

I'm in! Sadly, right now it's the opposite way.... which knowing that, makes it easy to rip down the right lane.

From the Port Mann/Highway 1 twitter account:
"Traffic accessing #BCHWY1 EB from Grandview will use new HOV on-ramp from 9PM-6AM. Pls note you can't exit @ Willingdon if using this ramp"

In a few hours, traffic will be able to go over the eastbound Grandview HOV ramp for the very first time!

Also, Hwy 1 between the Boundary overpass and the train tracks seems to be finally graded and ready to be paved.

I'll rip down any lane that I am allowed to drive in. What I do is approach it like a obstacle course and try and plan why way around the different pylons (slow drivers). Of course those pylons are moving and will be changing their location relative to other pylons. So I need to constantly be re-evaluating my approach and what lane to be in and what position and when to change lanes. It is even more fun when you are driving on a 6 lane free like in LA.

—, I didn't know. I haven't driven in that area for awhile.

The place is dangerous for real thanks to those idiot drivers. On past Saturday I was only 1 second away from being crushed by some truck-driving idiot towing a boat. I was driving on the middle lane at the normal speed and didn't see at all the driver speeding on the HOV lane, trying to cut in front of me just before the lanes merges. I was really just a second away from a crash, so based on the personal experience and the crash I saw on the previous Saturday at the very same place, it seems like very prone place to accidents!

Maybe left hand merges are just dangerous, people don't expect them. They should rearrange it so that the HOV lane continues as the left general lane and the right general lane has to merge left.

Easiest thing to do is ban all trucks from using the left most lane (not including HOV), and keep them in the right 2 lanes.

Ontario does this on all 6+ lane freeways and it works very well. Just mount a sign above every overpass pointing down on the left lane saying NO TRUCKS.

They are more dangerous because its harder to see cars on your right then on your left because the driver is located on the left. When a car is merging ultimately the pressure is on the merger to find a space to merge into as it is their lane that is ending.

It is why the left lane is the fast lane. When you switch lanes to the left (faster) lane it is easier to see the faster cars coming up on to you so you don't cut anyone off. While switching lanes to the right (slower) lane you see the cars you passed and can assume the slower cars are not coming on to you so you don't cut anyone off.

So yes a left merge lane on a highway is more dangerous, much more dangerous and in todays word should not have been built. It would probably be safer to separate the HOV lane away from the highway and then right merge it with the HOV on ramp lane and then merge it back with the highway somewhere past the Gilmore overpass. Pretty sure they will get plenty of bad accidents over there over the years..statistically speaking should be a guarantee (I have no idea what the statistics are right now, I don't feel like digging for the actual numbers)

Correct, it was just the kind of hillbilly monstrosity that you describe.

In Europe it is always the left passing lane that merges back to right main lane and never the other way around. And it makes sense. It's the car that is passing other cars that needs to find its way back to the main lane when the lanes merge, not the otherway around like in here. I really hate it when driving to Whistler and the highway has constant passing lanes. The lanes are good, but it is so annoying that the slower traffic needs to merge with the faster traffic and nobody is ever giving any space.
