Kudoos to the host in this one! he obviously see how silly this resident is ... and she seems so out of touch and not understanding it at all

and hey in the end Mr. Chaulk throws in an opinion and LOVES this development and tears the Quality Inn woman down hahaha

That's a good one, at least I agree with Mr. Chaulk here. Nothing new is welcomed by NIMBYs in downtown St. John's.

A small correction - I noticed that in both interviews, the host kept referring to the old Newfoundland Hotel as a 5 to 6 story building, when it was actually 8 stories, much taller than any of the new proposals in the East End. The other thing, since reference was made to European cities as examples to follow, is that in most European cities 6 storey buildings are common and have been for a long time.

What is up with the Quality Inn being all upset with this proposal? Which engineer would imply that construction next door would likely damage their foundation?

If anything the Quality Inn is nothing but an eyesore in that section of the city, and this development would really make it stand out more. Also, construction should not be haulted because of noise.

EDIT: woah. The woman in the second podcast is unbearable. I also hate people who pronounce Quebec as "Ke-bek".

At the public hearing for this proposal, the owner of the Quality Inn (who has a beautiful accent - Scottish, I'd guess) made it clear - and I think genuinely so - that it's not about competition. She said her hotel and this boutique hotel are going after completely different customers. And that makes sense.

What doesn't make sense to me is that her main complaint, besides the inconvenience of construction, is the loss of views. But this proposal is BEHIND her hotel, not in front of it. The only views she's losing are of the back of the Crazy Horse.

Hilarious response from the Quality Inn spokesperson. That hotel basically destroyed most of the view from the Classic Cafe years ago when the hotel was built. Now she is complaining that this new hotel will destroy her view of the skanky strip club. She rather that that next door than a classy hotel? Typical NIMBY response.

CRA CEO to Make Presentation on Regional Economics

Quote:
The CEO of Corporate Research Associates will address the St. John's Board of Trade today. Don Mills will present his proposal for urban centered regional economic zones in Atlantic Canada. Mills says regional economic zones could be centered around cities and small urban towns with a population of at least five thousand.

Mills says there are at least a dozen small urban towns in this province that could serve as economic centres. He suggests that regional economic zones could service surrounding rural communities within an hour's commute. He says up to 90 per cent of the region's population could be served by regional economic zones.

Wow. Big movie news. Sobeys and Empire Group just announced it is selling it's movie theatre chain to Cineplex. I wonder how this will affect the proposed theatres on Torbay Road now?

Also, an article on Danny Williams in Macleans which sheds a bit of light on his Glencrest development.

It is encouraging to see some of his comments regarding the design and character of the area.

Good to hear demolition's underway at Tulk's. If I'm ambitious enough I should be in the best position to take update photos of one of my favourite developments in the city (I mean, I'm at least 50 steps closer to the site than Signal).

Aaaand with that, I'll check out for another month. I don't seem to have much time for the forum this summer.

I almost had a house on Cookstown Road right around the corner from it.

Can't wait to see the harbour fence completed, or at least a bit more constructed. There was an opinion piece in The Telegram from a woman complaining about it today. She can't understand why security is an issue now if it wasn't an issue a hundred years ago.

I can't understand why women feel they need the right to vote.

It wasn't an issue a hundred years ago...
