You share the same view of many skyscraper enthusiasts. As big as Toronto is by Canadian standards, we won't feel like the city has arrived till it rivals any other on the planet. Canadians grow up viewing Manhattan as the gold standard and a sea of towers is what we covet from one end of the downtown to the other.

In today's world, skyscrapers do reflect on the amount of power and influence a city has. A skyline greatly influences people's perceptions of a place. Europe was an exception to the rule, but even they are in the game now. I compiled a very rough table with the help of others, so I hope people don't mind me posting it here. A few major skylines are missing as it's a work in progress, but this is what it looks like thus far:

Completed

Hong Kong 2354
Shanghai 714
New York 685
Tokyo 450
Bangkok 392
Manila 320
Dubai 306

Kuala Lumpur 190
Singapore 180

There is one city that I can think of without the financial wherewithal of Toronto, or the diversified economy of Toronto that leapfrogged Toronto in the Alpha City rankings almost by pure virtue of building a shitload of skyscrapers. It might not be the popular way of achieving world ranking, but lets face facts, it worked for them, then it can work for us too.

I also have similar lists for Under construction, Proposed, and Completed + Under Construction + Proposed to give a rough view into what might be 5-6 years from now.

Wealthy growing cities build skyscrapers. It's a good gauge of how a city stacks up against its global peers; Europe being the exception again.

It sure did. But it was also just continued up from the foundation and podium that was built when the first tower went up.

Regina's skyline looks as big as London's.

It is as big as London's, just not as tall. The density makes up for it though.

There was a time when it came to skyscrapers it was New York, Chicago, and Toronto. Maybe 1975ish to 1980ish.

Now Toronto is number 15.. and falling, even with ungodly construction happening now.

No, there was never a time that when it came to skyscrapers it was New York, Chicago, Toronto.

Toronto's big bank towers went up around the same time, if not a little later, than many of LA's, Montreal's, Houston's, etc...

But yeah, keep trying to put Toronto in there. Honestly, sometimes your home enthusiasm is downright delusional.
