Contrast this with what is happening down the road at Metropark, Marconi, Mirador and Mix. A similar thing could be done here with the consolidation of some properties and some vision...and of course money.

Is there a name on that Nunnery Hill/condo development? I can't remember ever seeing a render of the development.

The petition is being circulated by Facebook pages, including this one: https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=...36910098510.50085.198993970172804&type=1

So depressing. Why don't we just bulldoze everything between Gower Street and the Harbour, then?

How people can stand up for a HIDEOUS parking lot rather than a proper development... it's beyond me.

And welcome, Groves!

Thanks! I'm a longtime lurker of this board, but recently decided to join into the discussion.

I contacted those behind the post for Nunnery Hill that I linked above, and they sent me the site plan. It does indicate that the main level is Nunnery Hill grade, hence why people are concerned. It doesn't indicate the maximum height of the building, though, so it's difficult to know what the overall impact will be.

Here is the document, assuming this document was meant for public release: http://www.joshgroves.com/Nunnery%20Hill%20Site%20Plan.pdf

The document just lists the project as "Proposed Townhouse Development - Holloway Street & Nunnery Hill".

and now it's in the media ... I welcome any change to that God aweful building!

Sannie said, while talking about the proposal, (which she is excited about) that she use to dream of being wheeled down there in a wheel chair to see that the building had imploded on itself.

hahaha

New Hotel Proposal for Downtown St. John's

Quote:
A proposal before city council could see a new hotel development atop the parking garage at Atlantic Place in downtown St. John's. The planning is in its infancy with a few options being considered. The developer is deciding whether 36 hotel rooms per floor, 47 per floor, or 18 apartments will work best for the three floor extension.

Planning Chair Tom Hann says the proposal isn't expected to have an impact on area viewplanes as it will level off with the height of the existing neighbouring structure. The owners also have plans to spruce up the face of the large brick structure, which came as welcome news to those around the table. Hann says the dreary look of the parking garage will be no more.

He says the garage will be covered in this mesh screen that will add color and texture to the building. It will also act as a light feature, completely changing the look of the garage. Hann says there will also be recessed brick on Harbour Drive which will make the sidewalk wider for pedestrians.

That sounds excellent. The view at the top of the parking garage is great. It could be definitely be attractive to tourists, assuming the mesh actually does improve the look of the parking garage.

Sounds like a concrete proposal is still a ways off.. still in the early planning stages by the sounds of it. At least it's out there. I'm sure this will be a well received development around the board and will no doubt be approved ASAP- a rarity here!

They had a piece on the NTV News and showed a couple drawings while interviewing Tom Hann. This is what they showed.

I like the idea of the staggered setbacks and terracing, it's better than having just a rectangular form, also the "judicious" use of colour. The whole structure appears as an 11 storey building, about 30+ m in height.

I' sure these are just rough concept renders to get an glimpse at the idea and I think it's be very interesting and much better than what's there! I say go for it!

from my understanding, they will be able to do very creative things with the lighting.. by the looks of the imagine in the far bottom right hand corner, they may be able to project things on the wall as well.. I'm excited to learn more! Imagine how this will look from signal hill!

That looks amazing! I think I've already fallen in love with it ahah. It kind of reminds me of Habitat 67 in Montreal, but with a colorful Newfoundland spin on it!

If I was a tourist planning to visit here my first pick for a hotel would definitely be that place, I can only imagine the view they'd have! If the proposal goes as planned it'll be a landmark of its own!

Wow, what an interesting concept! I like it; really it's probably the best you can do with what you've given, which is a stumpy, big block of a building. I'd be very interested to see a more detailed rendering of the concept.

It'll definitely add to the skyline, and will probably be the first thing you'd notice while coming through the harbour.

I'm never having children, so no worries - but, if I did, I'd name them all JCE now.

AWESOME find!

And:

Wow... I have zero complaints. As a new bldg, I'd be all... |—? But this actually has a nice retro feel. Complements Atlantic Place (ugh), fixes the hideous parkade... we're cool!
