Thanks for the clarification Future Mayor. I actually am quite relieved that Hyatt House is brick and metal, and not stucco.

I saw Comrade's picture before I saw the real rendering and was temporarily very excited. Now I'm all the more disappointed. How great would Comrade's rendering be next to the arena.

The obelisky thing on the Indy temple is an homage to a war memorial in the city, or something. Famous landmark there.

With all of those, including Philadelphia, I'm torn between liking the designs and being bothered at the fake historicity. But I'm not sure how to get around that in the 21st Century. "precast stone" panels designed to look like stonework, hung on a steel framework...I don't know.

I do like the look of the Philadelphia Temple...a lot. I hope it remains distinct.

All this talk about LDS temples, has me thinking about when the LDS church is going to build their new church on the old Alta Club parking lot on South Temple. Has anyone heard anything new? I really hope the design will be an urban one like:

or

Cambridge:



Given the location, I think it will be urban with hidden parking. I hope the height matches that of its neighbors (old Elks Lodge to the west and Brigham Apartments to the east).

The Harlem chapel is pretty cool. Don't like the second one very much. I just don't get that bricked-over window look that they keep putting on the front of chapels.

Since we're all off-topic, I will throw in an LDS building that is urban, yet so much better looking than the ones in Harlem and Cambridge. I am referring to the Hong Kong temple/chapel/Mission offices/parking garage. Anybody care to post a pic?

I didn't think the LDS church had been using precast stone since the '80s.

I might be using the wrong term. Here's an example from the Phoenix temple, currently under construction: As of late April 2013, attachment of the precast concrete exterior panels to the steel skeleton of the Phoenix Arizona Temple is completed. The panels feature beautiful relief work of the agave plant—a motif that will be carried throughout the temple.

...it looks better than it did in the 80s, don't get me wrong. I don't know what I expect. Not a bunch of masons working on the building for 40 years...

One last thing about the whole temple thing, and then I'll shut up. Uh, for this morning, at least.

One of my good friends had been working part time as a sculptor for the foundry that designs and makes various elements that are used to build LDS temples; the oxen that hold up the baptismal font, the light fixtures, the door handles; anything that's metal that you see when touring the building that isn't "off the rack," they designed. After seeing their work on the Brigham City temple, the church said "we'd like you to do 5 more"...so he quit his other part time job working at a computer all day and is now working at the foundry full time. He gave my boys and I a tour of the foundry, and they had hundreds of different pieces at some stage of production. It was fascinating, true old-world craftsmanship; they make them by hand, using the "lost wax" method of sculpting and casting. It was very interesting, and cool for my boys to see the process and the design work that goes into it.

They crank out the angel Moroni statues next door, but it's a different company. And those are hollow fiberglass with gold leaf, which I think is less interesting and more of a....cop-out. Or something. Me no good with words.

I'm glad somebody brought up the Phoenix Temple. I especially like the little spikey things on the corners. It gives it sort of a lacey (I guess that's a good word to describe it) look that turns it from ordinary to special. I think the Philadelphia temple will be the best one since the Washington Temple and I'm following it's construction very closely. In fact I'm working on a 3D model of it. Not having architectural renderings makes it difficult. The worst temple is the San Diego Temple, which is too Disneyish. Mormon temple architecture is a unique branch of architecture that is intensely interesting to me.

Thanks H4 for that excellent post on the hotel. It does appear like those panels are metal, instead of stucco, which is a big plus in my book. The combination metal with the brick will make a reasonably handsome presentation for that particular brand.

Also Jedi, I found your visit to the foundry fascinating. Thanks for bringing up the discussion of some of the interesting facets of the different design details of the LDS Temples.

I was hopeful when I saw the rendering too, but disappointed once I saw what material they were actually using. They are using metal looking paint on EIFS to simulate metal. EIFS is worse than stucco. They are also using thin brick. Thin brick is a fake, glued-on, and sheet applied material. Fake and fake are their choices of material.

The Congress for the New Urbanism conference will be here at the end of the month. The website has some interesting takes on Salt Lake. Judge your knowlege of the city by seeing how quickly you can identify the three blocks used for a redesign of the grid interotta (no fair using Google maps).

Thanks for posting that info about the CNU convention in SLC. What a great opportunity for SLC! If you haven't checked out the link yet, there are some great articles about SLC. One is a tribute from Andres Duany about the Mormon grid. Another is about another ideas competition on how to better design with the large blocks of the Mormon grid.

Another fascinating article was about how there will be a temporary set up for Granary Row starting at the time of the convention and will last for 6 months. It will feature shipping crates as temporary restaurants, etc. Check it out! However this is a unlikely spot since the church owns all that land between Temple SQ and the LDS business college block and their long term plans for that area is to either expand temple SQ west by adding more plazas, open green space and such or expand the business college if not both. So I don't see a CCH going there at all and I do think either way the Plaza Hotel days are numbered.

The Shilo spot is a very good spot for the new Hotel, however, again I ask.....are they willing to sell that land to a developer?
