It is indeed the row of buildings on the south side of 100 south between 2nd and 3rd East. The businesses were movie distributors and deCondes original space sounds like it is quite large. They call it Film Row, not Film Alley. Other businesses now in that stretch are design offices and dressmaker/boutique so it sounds like a good arts-y match. (Here's where I insert again my muttering that Boyer should use parking lot just to its east as apartments not office building).

And two, I'm honestly just disappointed there are hotels going in that spot anyway. I live a block south and the Marriott and Hampton hotels just east of Pioneer park seem to have zero positive impact on the vitality of the area. I think they're too car-centric (prominent, over built lots, etc.) so few people seemingly venture out on foot. They look like something that would be in a sketchy part of West Valley City, not somewhere that should be downtown. It's sad that we're letting this part of downtown basically be thrown away.

I know others have made these points before, but as someone who spends at least an hour a day in Pioneer Park, I've observed that the housing and restaurants in the area are actually making a difference. I went running last night in the park at 10 pm, for example, which I've been led to believe would have been a bad idea in the past. The hotels aren't contributing to this revitalization and, I think in some cases, are actually hindering it.

Anyway, here are a few pics I took from the gateway of the ESA hotel site. I took these Monday evening.

They're not showing up

There was until a few years ago an antique/decor place called Conde (more recently on Highland in Furniture Row) which looked like it was fairly big but I doubt 14,000 square feet.
Yeah, DeConde was pretty extensive. I remember exploring it's rooms of antics and replicas many times. It's space could have easily been 14,000 sq. feet. They use to provide a lot of set pieces

Off topic geographically, but I figured there would be more people here interested in this than in the Boise threads; the LDS Church just released a rendering of the Meridian Temple (12 miles from Boise?)...and it's very interesting.

Very much a tribute to the Cardston Alberta Temple, which is one of my favorites. Makes me more intersted to see what they'll come up with for Cedar City.

My boyfriend says that looks like a mix between a bank and a Turkish mosque.

It reminds me of some of the great deco architecture here in L.A. I think I like it's design a lot more than the Boise Temple.

Which...I...won't...no. But I laughed. And then I thought deep thoughts.

Well, the Boise Temple was part of that wave of cookie cutter temples during the 1980s, all with six spires; for me, the Dallas, Chicago, and Boise temples are all indistinguishable from the others.

And then in more recent years, the Timpanogos/Bountiful/Draper/etc temples are all one basic design with tweaks, and the Oquirrh Mtn/Rexburg others are the other. Would you like a box with a spire in the center, or a rectangle with a tower on the end? The Brigham City Temple was more of a departure from that, and I liked seeing that.

I prefer the variety, even if it's superficial, that we've seen over the last three years or so; Indianapolis, Hartford, Tijuana, Meridian, and Philadelphia are all more distinct, and each seems to pay tribute in some way to its surroundings more than others I can think of.

Again, probably off topic, but just had me thinking.

Agreed...I do like some of the design sets better than others. For example, I really like how the Oquirrh and Rexburg Temples turned out. Always very cool when they're able to convert a beautiful old tabernacle like Provo or Vernal into a new reuse as a busy Temple.

With regard to the approval of the two hotels on 100 South, just so that people know, the Planning Commission and City Council did not approve the design. An applicant submits their plans and requests a building permit. The plans are checked to ensure that they meet zoning and building standards, if they do, they're approved.

Some have discussed a Design Review Committee and I personally don't think that's the right solution. Even if they met a few times a month they would be forced to look at dozens of projects at each meeting. I don't think it's feasible personally. A better solution woudl be an improved Zoning Ordinance with increased language with regard to design.

And I know that it is totally off topic but I think I like the design of the new temple in Idaho. I'm not sure why yet but I find it interesting at least which a lot of buildings constructed by the LDS Church though beautiful are generally not personally interesting.

Where is the retail? Where is the street engagement? Also, where is this great architecture the city promised would pacify those upset to see the current historic buildings go?

Most likely it's east of the stairs, as well as facing Main, thus equaling street engagement. Great architecture is a matter of taste.

If you look at the picture, east of the stairs is the brownstone building with O'Shucks, (which they did a horrible job representing, BTW).

I found a better rendering for the Hyatt House Hotel by the ESA. In fact the Hyatt looks to be a hell a lot better then the Courtyard by Marriott hotel from the other rendering.

http://www.utahbusiness.com/articles/view/new_downtown_hotels_announced

Looks like there is a bit of hope with the Hyatt hotel not being all stucco as the Courtyard looks to be.

Is this correct? or is this a similar looking Hyatt House at some other location. I thought the building went right to the corner of 300 West and Stockton to Malone Drive

Actually if you look at the picture closely, there is first floor space within the building footprint east of the stairs, underneath the second floor landing of the staircase. This space looks to be nearly 1/4 of the first floor footprint on the north side of the tower. This could very easily accommodate a small retailer, just as the north portion of 222 now has Image Eyes Optical.

The Hyatt House will be on the western portion of that parcel, with the Courtyard on the Corner of Stockton and Malone. A parking entrance will be between the two. As far as the rendering goes, I do like the look of the Hyatt House, it isn't suburban in nature, has a decent sidewalk presence and looks to have retail space available.

The Indianapolis temple looks like a bank with Cleopatra's Needle on top, but I like it.

I really love the design of the Philadelphia temple.
