It's funny to compare Toronto's current skyline to some of the older renders. This is Cassius' "Toronto 2015" render from 2005. Talk about overachieving.

Overachieving -- yes, evidently. But man...this Toronto rendering makes the CN Tower look absolutely incredible! It has a dominance in height, an amazing contrast that is flanked by two dense clusters of towers; and to the west of the CN Tower looks virtually as developed as the Central Financial District.

The Oxford proposal will destroy this visual effect. The CN Tower will become less unique in Toronto's landscape, because its grandness will be diminished by its immediate company.

A less significant icon, soon.

That's the issue I had with the development as well. But a lot of people seem to be gung-ho for something to "bridge" the skyline and transition between the tower and the financial district so the won't be too dominant. Many people seem to want it to be integrated as just another element in the skyline rather than be something separate and monumental, which to me is what is more appropriate and pleasing and how the tower was intended.

Don't get me wrong; I do want to see more tall towers built, just not anything that's going to crowd the CN to much and diminish its solitary monumentalism.

Pretty good shot of the rapidly growing density outside Vancouver's downtown core.

That's the eastern end of Rene Levesque, right? It has the potential to be one of the most impressive streets in America one day: on the same level as Michigan Avneue, Avenida 9, and Park Avenue. It seems that Montreal is only now turning its attention into building this grand avenue into something special. I'm eagerly looking forward to all the new residential that's set to go up along this street.

Fortunatley René-Lévesque will start filling in a bit more west of Drummond, which at the moment has more vacant lots than buildings. The height and architecture of these projects could have been better, but it should be a big improvement nonetheless.

The part of René-Lévesque east of Complexe Desjardins needs a few more towers, although at least it does not have as many parking lots. The worst part is probably the vast swath of land surrounding the Maison Radio-Canada (visible in the foreground on the left side of the picture), which desperately needs to be filled in (although this project does not seem to be advancing).

The thing with eastern Rene-Levesque is that it has been quietly been filling up lately but none of that has been taller than 15 floors. In fact, most of the new projects there are in the 8-10 storey range, the CBC project size will not exceed 11 floors, if we can trust the current literature and renders. R-L east will eventually be filled, but it won't be Michigan avenue style, they're rather trying for something like a Parisian boulevard, which I think is a big mistake.

Wow, the leaves are in full bloom in Montreal and Vancouver, still just buds here. It surprises me how we can be so far behind sometimes.

Great shots everyone!

I dunno what parts of the city you've been in, but Prince's Island Park, the Northwest, and North Central areas of the city are all in full bloom. Only a few species of trees haven't bloomed yet. This weekend was amazing, I wish I had taken the pics I posted this weekend, but it was all last weekend before the bloom Can't believe we've already had a record breaking day over 30 and it's not even mid-May.

The problem I have with Rene-Levesque is that it's too damn wide. Feels more like a freeway than a city street. They should devote a couple lanes to an LRT down the center of the street and would make it much more pleasant.

^ Yes my aunt called me yesterday telling me how warm it was in Calgary. Meanwhile in Ontario it was 4C and snowing! Just a quick correction though: The Calgary weather station (both at the airport and at Olympic Park) only recorded a high of 28.6C yesterday so the temps didn't actually hit or exceed the 30C mark. But based on the long range models, it's looking like Western Canada is in for a treat this summer. Temps are supposed to be above normal by a couple of degrees.

I didn't say yesterday was the 30 degree day, I didn't even allude to that. Just said we've already had a record breaking day over 30 and it's not even mid-May.

We've had +20 for a good 3 weeks now, a week an a half ago it hit 30 in some parts of the city, broke the airport record, and I think Lethbridge might have even gotten 31. It's weird how it's like the weather almost knows when it's the weekend, 4 of our 5 warmest days so far have been the past 2 weekends. So nice sitting outside watching my man ref rugby games on Saturdays. A great excuse to chill in the sun, drink beer, and throw the ball around. So good!

The leafs are just coming out, but are still small right now (as you can see in your pictures above). In another week it will be a different story I bet.

My photos are over a week old. Refer to SurrealPlaces recent posts of photos taken this weekend, everything is green. Again, I live in the city, I see the leaves, I spent time in all 4 quadrants this weekend... certainly not just buds anymore.
