Believe me I'm far from an NDP apologist and would be the last person to support just about anything they do, but the fact is the capital region of the province generates a disproportional amount of the tax revenue for this province and supports the rest of the province outside the capital region.

As far as having overland flood waters cover a few farms, that is a small price to pay compared to the damage that could occur downstream where potentially thousands could be effected, YES those farmers flooded out should be compensated.

I lived in Hepburn for a few years in the late 80s and early 90s so I remember the dry years.

Having done a search of this board I know there has been some previous chatter about Steinbach, MB, a city of ~13,000 about an hour southeast of Winnipeg. As a resident and recent interested party in urbanism, I wanted to capitalize on the opportunity to showcase some of the things occurring in this town. I hope a dedicated thread fits within the guidelines of this forum.

Since my education deals with other topics, I'll try to refrain from editorializing too much in favour of a more descriptive approach. That said, I have my own fledgling ideas about what kind of town Steinbach should become, so I hope you forgive me when I slip up now and then.

My posting may be more sporadic than most, but I hope to maintain at least a weekly presence.

One thing I would like to see redeveloped is the strip mall area at reimer and main. Anyway, Steinbach really interests me since it is one of the fastest growing cities in Canada. A lot of good things happening there, but there is also room for a lot of improvement. I hope that a nice urban park could be built their, along the lines of the island park in Portage la Prairie.

There was a sub contractor tender notice in the May 11 Free Press for the new Steinbach Credit Union.

Looks like Penn-CO out of Blumenort is the Contractor and Ray Wan is the architect

The troubled Hecla Island Resort has reopened once again, this time under the management of Lakeview Hotels & Resorts.

This resort is quite nice and is situated in a pleasant setting, but it has always been an iffy business proposition. The previous owners sank a lot of money into renovating and improving the place after they took it over from the crown corporation that originally built it and ran it for years (it's still hard to believe that not too long ago Manitoba had crown corps running hotels and a cruise ship, but I digress). If nothing else the new owners probably stand a decent shot at running a profit since they aren't responsible for all the costs of improving the place.

Lakeview has a good track record in Manitoba which suggests that they know what they're doing. Proof of that is that they've reduced the room rates a bit from the resort's Radisson days.

That's good to hear, I spent a few days there several years ago with my family at Christmas and it was quite nice. At the time though I wondered at how the hotel could stay open in winter - the market for cold weather outdoor enthusiasts seems like it would be pretty thin. But the hotel itself was very nicely renovated and I bet it would be pretty fun there in the summer.

Amazing (Hecla Island,) for camping ,golf,boating,hiking,fishing,snow shoeing,cross country skiing etc.As a former employee of the Palleta's, Lakeview will do and amazing job here, bank on it.

The Regina Beach Yacht Club reopened this weekend after it had to be demolished due to the flooding in 2011. It is an amazing addition to the waterfront at Regina Beach. It is includes a bar modeled after a 1951 Chris Craft, including the inlaid mahogany, authentic bow light and chrome Chris Craft logo.

Rail terminal expansion will move more crude

Enbridge Inc. and privately-held Tundra Energy Marketing Ltd. are working together on a project to bring growing light oil production from Saskatchewan, Manitoba and North Dakota to market by rail.

Under a memorandum of understanding announced last week, each company will own half of a loading terminal near Cromer, Man., which should be able to handle some 60,000 barrels of crude per day early next year.

Alberta crude may soon be shipped through Churchill

DAUPHIN, Man. — With proposed pipelines to the south and west in jeopardy, Alberta crude could soon be moving through the Port of Churchill, says a spokesperson for the port.


Brad Chase, president of OmniTRAX Canada, which operates the port and a rail line from The Pas, Man., to Churchill, said his firm has been working with oil companies for nearly a year, and a shipping agreement may be imminent.


“We have a number of companies that are very interested,” Chase said at the annual meeting of the Hudson Bay Route Association, held in Dauphin April 3. 


“The companies … are producers, mid marketers ,who trade the product, and refiners…. We’ve been in conversation with all (of them) and have some that, right now, are very close to transaction to move through Churchill.” 


Harrison said the power of the oil industry might convince Transport Canada and shipping industry insurers to extend the season another month.


Oil shipments could also help secure the port’s long-term financial prospects.

Does anybody know where to find info. on property rezoning public hearings in Winnipeg?

I look on the City Clerk's website and it has all the agendas and minutes from various meetings. Last week in the Free Press print edition they had a posting of a public hearing for the Transcona West development, property west of Peguis and north of Ravelston. I'd like to attend the hearing but can't find the print paper and can't find the info online. Any help would be appreciated.
