Here a couple of CC hotels I like and no matter the height, I wouldn't mind seeing on the Royal Wood site.

Philadelphia (Marriott, 1,408 guest rooms, 242', 23 floors)


Denver (Hyatt, 1,100 rooms, 489' 38 floors)


Austion proposed (near the CC, over 1,000 rooms, 50 stories)


Houston under construction (1,000 rooms) this will be Houston's 2nd directly connected CC hotel.

I don't have any information on that. Each time I ask, I am only told that they are working on it.

Believe me, if I get a better answer, I will let it be known but for now all I can say is that they are working on it.

I like Houston's. I think that would fit Salt Lake best out of those examples, and it appears to have convention space beneath the tower.

I like both Houston's and Austin's. I'd love to get more pure glass in our skyline (which is why I'm kinda excited to see what UPAC looks like when constructed).

I bet if we were to send these examples of other cities putting up convention center hotels, to the right people ( county council members, etc.) we might get faster results. We are exposed to these examples more readily on this forum than they probably are. I think I'm going to email them with the Portland article, and the Austin and Houston examples.

There are some on the County Council that do need persuasion to fully back support for the hotel.

Unfortunately, they are easily identified by the (R) next to their names.

I do recommend and encourage everyone to email the County Council members with the information regarding the Convention Hotels going up in other cities as well as the funding method that is used for them.

This will show that there is actual citizen support for funding the hotel and will also provide the backers with more information that they can use to help persuade others.

SLC Planning is starting to work on an update to the Downtown Master Plan. We've developed a cool website or at least I think it's cool, where you can click anywhere downtown and leave a note about the location: http://maps.slcgov.com/iamdowntown/ It just went live this afternoon so it's a bit empty.

I also like this one. Glass is nice, and I have neither hate nor love for the UPAC tower, but I wish we had a few more stone-clad towers.

This is from a few days ago, but I noticed the speculation about Metro West. Relatedly, I was jogging in Pioneer Park about two weeks ago (give or take a week) and what looked like a group of developers and investors were there. It looked like they had a rendering of either BPL or the Uffins Market lofts, but they were pointing at the gap just north of Big D Construction and talking about building.

I couldn't gather much via eavesdropping while jogging by (I passed them many times as I went around the track) but it looked like they were at least exploring some potential project.

Thought that might be interesting to some people here.

Also, regarding the hotel. Who was it, I think Makid, that explained so articulately the fact that there are several mechanisms being worked on for funding the Convention Hotel. The formula just voted down is not even considered the best choice, right?

fencing just went up around the building just south of Smiths on 500 S for the apartment complex being build there.

Naw.. The plaza hotel block is a better location. Nicer area, nicer views, closer to trax, closer to shopping, closer to salt palace entrance.. Closer to temple square (big tourist attraction)..

Yeah yeah.. The church owns it.. Money talks. Don't count it out until they say no to the idea.. A hotel in that location would be a benefit to them.. They might be open to a sale/land swap.

I couldn't find them, but they are posted somewhere one here. It was the one with a lime green wall (or the lime green panels or highlights, I don't remember exactly), and I know that makes them sound awful but everyone was pretty positive about them.

I think RWP proves to be a better location, you just need to connect the hotel across 200W by either a skyway, or better yet, you put all of 200 W below grade as it is earlier on in that block and expand the convention center over the top of 200W, as well as having a connection point to the north part of the convention center which is already on the west side of 200W. That way convention goers would not even have to cross a street to get to the hotel.

Little off topic.. But I thought That I would mention it..

The movie SLC Punk is getting a sequel called Punk is Dead. The original cast is returning.. Im hoping that it films in SLC.
