PITTSBURGH | Development Rundown II

It looked like a cult type movie. Some of the scenes were so bad they were hilarious. I kind of think that was the point. I might just have to see it for the laughs. The scene with Don Rickles in the hospital bed was awesomely cheesy.

Anyway, Pittsburgh is one photogenic city.

Also, there is an actual movie called Pittsburgh that Jeff Goldblum made a few years ago as a mockumentary about his home city that he actually filmed while doing a run of The Music Man at The Benedum I believe. It was pretty funny in that Jeff Goldblum kind of way. And it was playfully poking fun of his hometown and he truly does like the city.

Only wish he brought more A-listers here for it, I see that video had Goldblum and his gf riding the Phantom's Revenge at Kennywood . . . always a nice touch!

I saw part of that movie. Funny seeing 1979 Pittsburgh in a motion picture. I remember a shot of Downtown from the vantage point from the Civic Arena and not seeing a One Mellon Center or One Oxford Center -- yet... I believe both were still in the planning stages when they were making that movie...

It's ironic that it's about a pro basketball team...

I was in The Music Man during my high school days, and I've always enjoyed that show. In fact, my first trip to Pittsburgh was to see Jeff Goldblum perform as Harold Hill at The Benedum during the summer of 2004.

His girlfriend at the time played the female lead and was featured in the film, but their relationship didn't last very long after that.

Possible plans for redeveloping the recently-vacated Federal Reserve Building in Downtown:

M&J may convert the building into an office building or a boutique hotel, Sweeney said. He said that the company will probably use a partner to complete the deal but did not identify one. “This would make a great place for a data center since the building has major vaults,” he said. Among changes planned for the building are a 3,000-square-foot roof top deck, installing a fitness center, gutting the interior but not touching the mechanical systems which are modern and efficient.

This is a really fantastic building, at least from the outside, and I hope they preserve its character.

Caught this little tidbit earlier this afternoon. This one could be really fantastic!

Either office, residential or hotel, it really doesn't matter to me. I'd say Pittsburgh could use more of all three!

Agreed.

That said, I have a slight preference for a hotel. I think Downtown could use a few "boutique" hotels in general, and more hotel space this close to the Convention Center would also be useful.

Speaking of movies (and television shows) shot in Pittsburgh, it looks like NBC has passed on the "Hatfields & McCoys" pilot.

I don't know that it was actually being shot in Pittsburgh, but according to the article:

"Hatfields & McCoys" had been a particularly high-profile pilot, with Theron's participation and the popularity of the History miniseries of the same name last year. (The pilot placed the feud in modern-day Pittsburgh.

Looks like the software designers at SimCity don't regard Pittsburgh too highly...

Instead, what I did was that I came up with two extreme cases -- around the office we call them "Berkeley" and "Pittsburgh," or "Green City" and "Dirty City."

A while ago, a forumer made a map of all proposed and under constriction Pittsburgh projects with the promise that they would update it regularly. Seeing as that forumer has sort of fell off the face of the earth, leaving their map woefully outdated, I decided to make one of my own. I will keep it up to date with the latest news regularly.
