I agree that it was a great place 10 years ago.. As was gateway as a whole. With all of the complaints I listed.. None of them were really pertaining to the staff.

The place is kept clean and the staff is friendly... That is not the problem.

The problem is that everything in the place is horribly out of date and starting to fall apart.. The problem is the owners.. It is actually quite shocking. Jordan Commons is older then gateway.. Yet it seems to have been much better maintained and does not seem quite as out of date.. The shocking part is that they are both owned by the LHM group..

One thing that LHM needs to upgrade as a whole is their ticket system.. Fandango is much nicer then their inhouse setup.

Do you all remember, years ago (maybe five-to-ten) when Salt Lake City released plans for its redevelopment of the area between 300 West and the freeway? There was a big push initially - with the city (or maybe a developer, I can't remember) releasing renderings of what the neighborhoods could look like. They even projected how many people could live in this area, but I don't remember what the number was - maybe 10-20,000 additional residents? Regardless, it was a dense, urban community with walkups and apartments. Unfortunately, after the initial buzz of the release, the idea was never really revisited and I don't recall hearing anything substantial since - though there remains discussion on how to redevelop that area.

What we're getting there is not what the city initially proposed, or at least wanted. Citifront and Bridges doesn't remotely fit the development of what I remember seeing, and while I understand they were mock-up renderings of what the area could look like, it just makes me wonder 'what if'. And now that the Gateway could be on the decline with City Creek being the number one retail option now (something that has concerned me dating back to the initial announcement about the malls in the early 00s), it's made me think of these plans. I tried searching, but can't find anything on 'em, specifically a rendering or the initial release of the project. It also seems the city has moved on to other ideas (Gateway District, which was released with the Downtown Rising plans a few years ago and NOT what I'm thinking about ... as well as the Granary District, which, I believe, encompasses part of this area).

So, does anyone else remember these plans? I'd like to say they were released in 2004 or 2005 - maybe a bit later or earlier? I can't remember exactly.

I actually really like the all the projects going on around the city. Especially west of the gate way. I really like driving down 500 west after work and imagining a small canyon made up of residential units on either side. It would be so cool to see the gateway district fill up making it dense with residential. I don't see salt lake building residential buildings higher than 7stories any time soon so I'm fine with the 3 to 6 story ones that are filling up spaces around the city.

Actually, Gateway tried to get any company that would to open a grocery store there for years, but couldn't convince any grocer to open a store there.

They should resume that effort and keep trying. More and more people aremoving downtown, and a lot of them are moving into their neighborhood. If it wasn't possible then, I would hope they've realized how circumstances have changed. Get to work Gateway!

Seriously, if anyone from Gateway trolls this board, here are some ideas, per my own and other forumers:

Bowling Alley
Grocery store
Laser Tag
Petco or PetSmart
More restaurants and bars
Another music venue
Invite food carts to set up shop.
Invite street performers/ musicians
Put a cafe in the southern region. It is ridiculous that that the two Starbucks are right next to each other!
Paint the stucco with some vibrant colors!
Remove the stucco from the clock tower, replace with brick!

Comrade, I remember something similar to that, but it was North Temple the Gate Way to the city. There was no light rail, just a very nice looking street scape and low to mid-rise towers lining both sides of the street from about 10th West or so up to the viaduct. And if my memory serves me correct, that was about 20 years ago. So what I am thinking about may be totally different from what you are thinking about...

Hundreds of smiling faces brought a new kind of life to downtown’s 300 South on Saturday as Salt Lake City kicked off its first Open Streets festival on a picture-perfect spring day...

The festival attracted a lot of cyclists decked out in "Star Wars" costumes, declaring, "May the Fourth be with you."...

It'd look like the circus took over. Like a carnival. Actually. Really interesting idea. At night it would be awesome but it would look tacky in the day if it was painted. But it its the lighting..go for it. I really do like it

Agreed, the evening lighting would be way cool. Neon pink and purple paint during the day would be pretty tacky.

Yes, it is the same painting. I talked to a representative of the developer a week or so ago, and she said that the developers liked that painting a lot, so they are looking into getting the same artist to design and paint another mural--though it will not be the same. They just used that as a place holder for where the mural would be.

Obviously, if you're going to paint the stucco, you don't want neon colors. Though, lighter pastels would look good, I think. You know, something like this:

Kinda...but no, because it's mostly just one color (though with some red mixed in). If they added other pastels - like light blue and light orange and light green, I think it'd look world's better. Nothing too bold, kind of a subtle look ... but not entirely yellow stucco.
