My favorite parts of One Grandview were never the hotel and tower, but rather the plaza, the jumble of condos down the hillside, and the (deferred to later) staircase down the hill. All that really played with the location and emphasized what makes Downtown's setting special.

I agree Brian I've long been excited for the stairs, but my understanding is that the staircase is a totally independent project from the hotel. It was in planning stages before One Grandview was ever announced. Let's just hope that whatever happens up there, they still proceed with it.

Chevron acquires Kmart property in Moon for possible regional headquarters

A Kmart superstore in Moon may become the regional headquarters for one of the world's largest energy companies.

Chevron announced today that it had reached agreements to acquire the store property and an adjacent parcel of vacant land known as Marketplace Landing as potential sites for a regional headquarters office campus.

"Chevron is pleased to have been offered the opportunity to acquire this land, which provides us with a potential location as we continue to evaluate our options for a regional headquarters facility," Bruce Niemeyer, vice president of Chevron's Appalachian/Michigan business unit, said in a prepared statement. "We are committed to this community, to contributing to a vibrant regional economy, and to producing energy supplies that will fuel this region and our nation for generations."

Kmart announced last week that the Moon store, which employs 143 people, would close in July

Is that K-Mart right next to Robert Morris University? I'm trying to get an idea of where specifically in Moon this is. It looks like there might be a rather dilapidated-looking strip mall somewhat cattycorner to the Kmart...

You know, that whole corridor along University Blvd could make for one interesting business district for Moon...

Would this company be interested in Downtown office space? Plus, as the article states, they could use the industrial site at the former LTV Hazelwood location once it's redeveloped. It would be a win-win-win situation...

Too bad they didn't bring their search for a regional HQ full circle and move into the Gulf Tower downtown. Pittsburgh-based Gulf Oil merged in the mid-80s with Standard Oil of California which was then re-branded as Chevron. Most Pittsburgh operations were moved from the Gulf Building to California.

Chevron's definitely going to be building their regional campus over there, no doubt about it. While I of course would prefer it if they located downtown, it's still going to result in hundreds of new, high-paying jobs in the region. I've heard rumors about Chevron making this their Unconventional Resources Center of Excellence, which in a nutshell would result in potentially thousands to tens of thousands of visitors from around the world training at this location. As I said, it's nothing but a huge win for the region, regardless of whether it's in Moon/Robinson or downtown.

Montour Run? I guess that would make sense; that area is already emerging as a new business corridor. A Chevron reginal hq there would only add to the business scene out there.

Altho as Grego43 stated, it would have been sweet if they would've considered the Gulf Tower for their regional hq. Altho I don't think the Gulf Tower has class A space...

Glowrock, nice remarks, and you are right. It's going to be in Pittsburgh, and regardless of where specifically they're located it will be a huge win for the whole region.

As I posted earlier, I'm now hoping Pittsburgh can land Slovenia-based Grah Lighting for their N.A. headquarters. It would definitely help Pittsburgh to further establish itself as a world-leader in new technology development...

That location probably makes a lot of sense for them. If they are training people... people will fly in and out with ease and for those who have to travel to off site locations, perhaps that works too. While having them downtown, would have been an even bigger win, I think that for other reasons it was unlikely for that to happen and I will just sit here and accept the nice get that it is...

I've heard that USS has all but given up on the airport site and is concentrating on a city location.

What is the incentive for USS to move (elsewhere downtown) - other than possibly lower rates (and even then it costs a lot to move that many people)?

They have a solid location in signature building named after them, with T access as well...

The Village of "Shadyside" next door looks still looks so out of place with it's suburban winding streets and that obnoxious wall facing Penn Avenue.

I'd love to see that plaza redeveloped some day, but I'm not holding my breath. Everything in there seems to be doing too well. I wonder if there would be some way to do in-fill there and convert it into more of an urban blocks feel without screwing up business for the current tenants?

The rents aren't going to be lower in another building - in fact they will most likely be much higher.

They aren't happy with UPMC in the building. USS is no longer the lead tenant in that building and they don't like that. They want to be in a single tenant building. They also need to consolidate a number of units that are spread out in other locations and they really can't expand in the tower with UPMC in place.
