^ there's no way KR is going to come even close to that number.. maybe a third of that

I don't know what they're got in mind for $850 mil.. but they should just forget about that for the time being. One bloated city project at a time please.

Council Roundup – April 24, 2013

April 25, 2013

Council receives update on downtown Community Revitalization Levy
Council received an update on the proposed Capital City Downtown Community Revitalization Levy (CRL). There are 12 projects under consideration, totaling $409 million. Of that, $139 million is for the downtown arena and related infrastructure, with the other $270 million for other downtown improvements, including parks, servicing the drainage system and upgrading Jasper Avenue. On May 8, 2013, Council will vote on the final list of projects for the CRL.

New bylaw to reduce environmental footprint
Council passed a bylaw that helps reduce the city’s environmental footprint while making it easier for businesses to find important regulatory drainage information. The bylaw reduces limits on the release by business of certain contaminants such as oils, grease and chlorine, to align with national environmental regulations. It will also see development of a code of practice to assist the business community in compliance. The bylaw, which comes into effect June 1, 2013, represents an amalgamation of three earlier bylaws addressing sewer use and surface drainage, making it possible for businesses and citizens to find the associated regulatory information in one place.

Council approves Groat Road Bridge Replacement Project funding increase
Council approved a recommendation to increase the budget for the 102 Avenue over Groat Road Bridge Replacement Project by $11.5 million, to a total of $32,150,000. The budget increase was needed to enhance the drainage infrastructure ($3.5 million); stabilize the slopes on both sides of the ravine ($4 million); provide transit service and a pedestrian shuttle for the duration of construction ($2 million) and a $2 million allowance is being maintained to cover the cost of inflation. The new 102 Avenue over Groat Road Bridge will be built in 2014-15.

Had a chance to see a proposal for the new Terwilliger Foot Bridge.

The proposal calls for a Stressed Ribbon Bridge.

If they get their way, would that be a case of the tail wagging the dog?

They are not moving into the old Epcor space. They needed more space and GE couldn't accommodate them. So they are on the hunt. Last I heard is that they'll likely stay in Scotia.

Mr. Dub is a remarkable guy that has a huge heart for Edmonton and we for him. I will be very interested to see which restaurant group he decides is a good fit as well as can be profitable in this remarkable location. I wonder what was on the menu in 1905...and if the menu will have a nod to some of that.

Liver & Onions was a common sight back then. Heck, even the Silk Hat (1912) still had it on its menu before it closed to become the Hat. Pot pies and stews would also be a common sight.

Hopefully he carefully chooses the bar operator. I don't want it falling into the hands of someone who will turn it into another douchebag hangout. We don't need another O2 or Hudson's or Canadian Brewhouse there.

Yes, and in the clip he said he's talking to several restaurant groups re: leasing the bar, one that will respect its history.
What did I miss?

Moving along...anyone know the seating capacity of the space and if the layout is conducive to live performances. I know that the acoustics may be fine (based on Dub's comments) but I do not recall seeing a floor plan being posted on-line anywhere. Assuming the layout is optimal for table and drink service while accommodating a good sized crowd - there may be potential for a venue to augment what the Yardbird provides music wise or along those lines.
