More people commuting into city’s downtown, survey shows

EDMONTON - Growing numbers of people are going downtown to study, work or unwind, but fewer of them are taking a car, a city transportation study shows.

About 49,600 commuters stayed in Edmonton’s core during a typical weekday last September, up 24 per cent from a similar study done in 2009, according to the central business district cordon count released last month.

Just over half this group made the trip in private vehicles, down from slightly less than two-thirds three years ago, while the number travelling by bus or LRT rose to 42 per cent from 39 per cent.

The figures are good news for Edmonton, chief city economist John Rose said Friday.

“The LRT in particular has really done very, very well in terms of attracting more ridership. Of course, because that’s so focused on downtown, more people will be brought to the downtown area,” he said.

“We have seen a more diversified downtown economy, more facilities and more businesses opening.”

The latest figures indicate a big change in how people get downtown from nearly a decade ago, when a 2004 study showed 66 per cent of trips were taken by cars and trucks and 35 per cent on transit.

That count didn’t include bicycles or pedestrians, who made up a total of eight per cent of last year’s trips.

Well, there is a new tower proposal that I'm involved in that should be coming out shortly. Very Vancouver design-wise. Simple, modern, townhouse podium, efficient layouts. I'd like to tell you more, but that'll come in a few more weeks.

The Oliver Community League is hosting a Community Consultation on May 11th, starting at 11am at the Christ Church hall. For those of you concerned about the proposed development on the site, this is a great chance to have your voice heard.

Good...hopefully there's enough people there to convince the developers that their proposal is located in the inner core of one of Canada's 1 million+ metro areas, not some small prairie podunk like Ponoka or Moose Jaw.

It might be time for Sir Winston Churchill, standing in his lonely corner on a high pedestal and plinth, to have a conversation with Lunchbox Joe on the ground. And invite Madonna of the Wheat to come over for a chat as well.

In the details for a proposed $50-million remake of Churchill Square - which has already been given a rough ride by city councillors - there is a plan to move some of the art pieces now scattered around...

Maybe we've become jaded, or perhaps don't remember what Edmonton was like in the past - but to see this picture makes me really really excited for Edmonton. Competing condo towers in our core??? Hells Yes!

The 80s were exciting to work in construction with all the office towers going up. But looking around now with all the cranes currently up and the others that are scheduled to go up make for an exciting skyline. Driving in from all sides of town you can see quite a few cranes which I feel give the impression of a vibrant city on the move.
