Loads look good on the YEG- EWR route as of now looking over the start into July it shows about 70-80% full and higher yield seats look good!

Heres to hoping the US doesn't go into a travel decline as a result of today's Boston tragedy...

Flew out of YEG Sunday night (to SYD via YVR). The new expansion looks great, the new tower looks amazing, the living wall is very cool. The number and selection of shops is impressive for an airport our size. Well done, EIA.

So ive been wondering why YEG has so few photos taken? It turns out that YEG is not a photo friendly airport. Im not sure if its a major misunderstanding by the airport security folks or the RCMP but ive been hearing that alot of photographers are literally being ran off airport property...

I do know that in my time at YEG it wasnt unusaul to have the odd airport security officer issue with spotting/photography but most of the airport based officers where friendly towards any observing folks. It seems that its gotten a little out of hand.

Calgary international on the other hand seems to be friendly to any spotters or photographers and I find it strange that they arent so well recieving at YEG. Once again so long as you are not crossing perimeter fences i fail to see a security breach... But apparently being anywhere near a fence gets airport security worked up and then the RCMP are informed... Im all for safety but it just seems odd to me.

Instead they are encouraging spotters to use the Leduc information centre parking lot that does not afford very good views unless you enjoy looking at the belly of a aircraft...

EDMONTON - Edmonton Airports announced Tuesday that Reg Milley, who has been president and chief executive since February 2005, is retiring within the next year.

The organization has issued a request for proposal to executive search firms in order to find a replacement.

Haha. If it was that easy...

EIA has hired a group to "headhunt" for a new replacement and Im sure there are many prospects being looked into.

Im pretty happy with my current position and offcourse the location as im not one for cold winters any longer.

Cancun international airport has come a long way since I first joined ASUR. Cancun was a collective gathering of virtually every charter and tour airline that exsisted... The thought of gaining scheduled service from Europe as a example seemed at times far flung but we managed to show several carriers that it was very possible to fly aircraft with more than all economy configurations into MMUN. Now here we are a few years later with Air France, British Airways, Aeroflot, TransAero and Virgin Atlantic adding scheduled service along side the ever growing sun charters from Europe.

We have made small gains in getting more "scheduled" service from Canada aswell, but I and others are working on getting more scheduled links from the most popular cities in Canada.

I have to be honest I would not feel ready to take on a large role such as CEO for any airport at the moment, and frankly I rather enjoy my interactions with the various airlines we work with.

And where else can I get home from work and throw on some shorts and flip flops and sit on the beach? Its just a 35 second walk from my front door... I still watch YEG and YYC with interest, but thats about it for this guy at the moment...

Looks like the new airport plan for the Riviera Maya may not happen due to ALOT of politics... Instead it looks like Terminal 1 will be demolished and a new larger terminal put in place to deal with our growth. Terminal 1 has not seen any extensive use since being closed in 2009 due to hurricane damage.

That's disappointing, I hate the 90+ min drive to that area after flying there. We stayed at the RIU Palace Peninsula in February near Cancun (10-15 min from the airport) and will probably not go down to the Mayan anymore as the drive simply isn't worth it (especially now that we are travelling with children).

^I agree. Coincidentally, i just came back yesterday from a 10 day trip to Orlando with young children. I haven't nailed down the cost comparison yet but i believe the cost is lower going to Florida than to the Mayan Riviera. I found the water colder along the Gulf Coast relative to the Mayan Riviera so if water is your thing than maybe Mexico is a better option. Also, the nonstop options to Cancun are great but the generally long travel time to the resort is a bummer.

On a side note, we flew YEG-YYZ-MCO-CLT-YYZ-YEG. A roundabout route but we did go through Aeroplan and the options are not very good at all. Other options included going through PHX, IAH or ORD but the connection times were 45 minutes so i bit the bullet and went through YYZ. I really don't know how Aeroplan gets away with even offering these types of connections. You're hard pressed to make these connections without kids considering flights generally board 20-30 minutes prior to the flight time.

I also find that people generally comment on how bad US airlines are relative to Canadian airlines. I agree on that as well. We flew AC and US Airways. US Airways had no seatback TV's and check-in in Orlando took 30 minutes (not joking). My wife and I were also curious by the fact that on one of the US flights, the flight attendants did not go over procedures when flying with an infant. I believe WestJet and Air Canada are very good airlines relative to any US airlines.

Not surprising, and it never made sense to me as to why they would need an entirely new airport at Tulum anyhow. What DOES need to happen is improve the highway along the coast to a full freeway. As others have mentione, it's the time it takes to get to the resorts that sucks, despite it not really being that long a distance. You poke along at 70 km/h or whatever, and crawl through Playa del Carmen - that is the killer.

We now have a new overpass that overshoots Playa Del Carmen and has drastically reduced drive times. I live in Akumal and its about a hour and 20 minutes each way...

If you guys ever want to avoid the airport transfer buses its really easy to hop on a cab or pre book a private shuttle that will take you nonstop to your hotel. You can get taxi charts online for each resort and the cost to insure you wont be charged more. The private shuttles are also pretty good and charge a flat rate to the resort that you are going to. Theres also the collectivo and its my mode of transport on days when I dont want to drive... The cost is usually about $10 bucks from Cancun to Tulum... And these guys drive new vehicles with room for bags and are very "speedy"... If I am going shopping in Playa its $3 from Akumal to Playa... Parking can be a nightmare in town so I usually opt for the collectivo.

The big problem with the new airport is that ASUR wants to manage the airport but its turned into a few other groups wanting to do it... Aswell there have been issues raised about the enviromental impact on the historic sites around Tulum. Instead we will likely move ahead with a new terminal in place of the old open air terminal 1. Ill post a few pictures of the proposed terminal when I get a chance.
