It could have been so different, Burlington was very nearly amalgamated with Hamilton in the 1970s. But some people in Burlington foresaw Hamilton's decline and didn't want to be burdened with paying for all that aging and declining infrastructure. So they convinced the new government at the time to reverse it and Hamilton even gave up Aldershot, a wealthy suburb, where a lot of Hamilton's elite lives to this day. Yes, it's a classic case of the wealthy parts of a metropolitan area trying to distance itself from the poorer parts. Westmount and Outremont are technically their own city and distinct from Montreal. I have a guy from Burlington on my football team and he almost goes into convulsions if you tell him he's a Hamiltonian. Hamilton is seen as blue collar so many deny the association at all costs.

It's inevitable that Hamilton will rebound due to its infrastructure, assets, and geography. When it does, perhaps we'll see Burlington and Hamilton re-integrate.

That's so stupid though. Hamilton is a fine city I'd be proud to come from there. I am ashamed of my hometown, but not because it's a blue collar town, but because it has one of the highest teen pregnancy and Oxy codon addiction rates for non-native communities in the country. I wouldn't be surprised if it was in the bottom five cities over 25 000 for education as well.

I agree with you, but it's quite common and just another form of brand association. Insecure people think that if they associate with a luxury/sophisticated brand its a reflection on themselves personally. The reverse is also true. Hamiltonians I know who now live in Toronto just cringe when people ask them where they grew up. It's ridiculous.

Here's a condo and hotel which were approved at Planning Committee today in Ottawa. The hotel (left) is currently an ugly office building that will be repurposed. I'm not really a fan of the condo, the design is bulky and way out of place with the Byward Market, but hey, what do I know?

The 45 storey Claridge Icon was also approved by the Planning Committee today.

It's a repulsive, vulgar lump that doesn't hold a candle to anything Cityplace (or the core of Toronto) offers despite the same materials being used over and over again. That's art. At one time everyone painted fat ladies. Another time angels. By the same token as calling aA, KPMB, P+S, KPF, etc. as creating a "blank canvas". You see one gothic cathedral, you've seen them all.

P.S. I don't see a unsually colour or materials palette with the Kelowna project either.

FYI Outremont is still part of the new city of Montreal. It never demerged like Westmount and a few others did.
