Yes, obviously. My (extremely logical question) was, why put "Hamilton [Burlington]" when it's just Burlington. Everyone knows it's in the Hamilton CMA, no one puts Vancouver [Burnaby], or Toronto [Mississauga], cause everyone knows where Burnaby, Mississauga, and Burlington are.

I think it would be fine if it was just the one tower. The design just gets too intense (busy) after being repeated four times in close proximity.

I'm sue there are people who don't know it's in the Hamilton CMA and instead think it's part of Greater Toronto. There are plenty of people from outside the region who think everything in the Golden Horseshoe is considered metropolitan Toronto.

It is a separate CMA but a pretty good case could be made for Burlington or even Hamilton being part of an extended Toronto area along with Oshawa, which is another CMA.

Burlington to Mississauga is only 30 minutes or so. Even downtown Hamilton to Union Station in Toronto is about an hour on the GO train.

Oshawa is part of the GTA but not the Toronto CMA, there is a term that includes Hamilton CMA called the GTHA. I believe the entire inner Golden Horseshoe should be considered the Toronto CMA, as it is nearly a continuous urban area around the southern shore of Lake Ontario... there are a few expanses of rural land but the whole area is far more generally urban than the majority of most American metro areas.

Does it really take that long to get from Hamilton to TO on GO?

Hamilton is not part of the GTA. It has an utterly distinct vibe, feel and even accent.

It's like saying Quebec City and Montreal are part of the same CMA.

Rubbish.

Hamilton being the location, Burlington being the area of Hamilton. Perhaps you're reading too much into that and I agree with Nouvellecosse that lots of people don't know that Burlington is part of the Hamilton CMA... even some people in Burlington seem unaware of that.

I fully understand why someone not from here would think that, but when you live here it becomes abundantly clear how independent and separate Hamilton and Toronto are. Hamilton is no more a part of Toronto than Baltimore is part of Washington. They might be right next to each other, but that's all they are.

Besides, it would be a huge loss if Hamilton ever got relegated to a mere extension of Toronto. It's a proud city with a long history and an awesome vibe. I hope it always remains a significant independent Canadian city.

I know people from Hamilton like to think they are their own city, which they are, but in reality everywhere from Niagara Falls right around the lake to Oshawa/Whitby are all considered the "Golden Horseshoe" It's literally a continuous stretch of urban area. Look at it from space at night time, the lights simply do not stop.

In my mind, Hamilton should be considered part of the Greater Toronto Area. Quebec City and Montreal are 200KM apart while Hamilton and Toronto are 25km apart (across the lake). Big difference. I think one day in the near future, Hamilton will be absorbed into the GTA. Just because a city becomes a part of a larger metro area, it does not lose it's identity at all.

With perfect traffic it's 45 minutes by bus, though it's usually a bit over an hour and the train is about an hour. If there's any problems the bus can take closer to two hours.

^ If there was no traffic it would take under 30 minutes by car.... if there was a boat it would take 15 minutes across the lake.

Yeah, equating Toronto - Hamilton to Montreal - Quebec City is absolute ludicrous UrbanDreamer. I never said Hamilton is part of the GTA, not even once. I said it is part of the GTHA, which it absolutely is, hence the H. I also said it is part of the continuous Golden Horseshoe urban area.

I have lived in Toronto and spent lots of time in Hamilton, isaidso. I'm from Woodstock. I never once came close to saying Hamilton and Toronto are the same city. Jesus, where are you guys coming up with this? We're talking about metropolitan areas, not cultural assimilation.

A ferry between the cities (as mentioned by Travis) would be cool. Did they ever have one?

The big appeal for most of them is that Burlington is not Hamilton, especially the people who grew up in Hamilton and "escaped" to Burlington

It could have been so different, Burlington was very nearly amalgamated with Hamilton in the 1970s. But some people in Burlington foresaw Hamilton's decline and didn't want to be burdened with paying for all that aging and declining infrastructure. So they convinced the new government at the time to reverse it and Hamilton even gave up Aldershot, a wealthy suburb, where a lot of Hamilton's elite lives to this day. Hamilton got stuck with all the old decrepit stuff while Burlington got 30 years of low taxes and a wealth of development fees and greenfield development sites along the QEW.

The redesigned Monaco Twins in Kelowna. Tower 1 will be the tallest building in British Columbia outside of Metro Vancouver at 88 meters if approved tomorrow. Not bad for a metro area under 200 000

They have eliminated the tower separation variance issue (one of the major issues council had with the proposal) by purchasing the property to the north of the development site. However they still require 7 variances. It would have 128 hotel suites and 161 residential units as well as commercial space on the street level.

It has a positive recommendation by city staff.

Is there a reason the design has to be so appalling?

Could be worse, like all the things being built and proposed in Hamilton except for a few of the shorter ones.
