It's a little sad, but hardly surprising, that Holt Renfrew is leaving its beautiful streamline moderne building on Sherbrooke, which is a more prestigious location, IMO.

The tower portion does not look great. It's almost as though we're replacing an ugly bunker from the 1970s with an ugly bunker from the 2010s. I'm also not sure if I like the logos tacked on the side.

Sid Lee is one the architect firms behing that project, so I'm more optimistic than you are. But still, I find it sad too that Holt Renfrew might leave its gorgeous Sherbrooke street location (one of the most beautiful streamline/Art Deco buildings in Canada, in my opinion).

My oh my, what are they gonna do with Holt now? I assume a luxury condo in the same vein as the Ritz carleton or ORO and Simpson.

Btw, love the new QDS, Montreal needs this tower. I know it's been announced at 28 floors, but I count at least 31 and more than that if you count the shaft on the left. I think it's fair to assume we're talking about 140m range here. Basically the same as the nearby le V.

ottawa theatre = spectacular.

i really like that montreal tower as well...its difficult to make a tower with those proportions look elegant but they did it.

This project "Eau Claire Tower" by Oxford is going ahead - Architect is Toronto's B + H. They secured an anchor tenant MEG Energy for 11 of the 25 floors. Another big parking lot gone in Calgary's Eau Claire district. Two of the largest parking lots just to the north of this are slated for a massive 7 building mixed use project - developed by GWL. RTKL is the architect. Have heard the site design is pretty great.

Why do Montreal towers all have such outrageously long names?

Tower sucks. Too short. Too boring.

A historic store closes its doors, a hotel that should have been renovated is torn down instead, for this?

Is the store actually closing, or just moving?

As for the tower, I don't know. It's kind of hard to tell with that weird night time, distorted-light rendering.

The Holt Renfrew is moving into the Ogilvy department store. It'll still exist but it's historic store on Sherbrooke is going to join other Historic mammoths like the Royal Vic and Hotel-Dieu hospital and become an abandoned shell.

The city should make it a requirement that the public have access to the rooftop of the new tower. Having said that, the Hotel de la Montagne was ugly beyond repair.

I've stayed as a guest in the hotel many times. The interior was great, the rooms were freshly renovated and the staff was great. The lobby was beautiful and the bar had a fantastic happy hour session 5 days a week.

The rooftop terrace was a institution, one of the city's coolest hang outs during the summer.

The only flaw about the hotel was it's concrete exterior. And as of now, that's the only thing that remains standing.

I thought it could have been renovated on the outside, which is not unheard of, but instead we're getting a new tower, of the same height, which will have an exterior that won't inspire anyone.

That is all I know.

Why do you keep putting "Hamilton [Burlington]"?

Burlington is a completely separate city. No one puts Toronto [Mississauga] or Vancouver [Coquitlam]... I don't understand...

Quite right. Burlington is part of the Hamilton CMA.
